The University of Ghana utilizes the Sakai Learning Management System (LMS) to support its educational activities, particularly for distance learning programs. Sakai is a fully open-source platform created by and for educators, designed to provide students and faculty with an optimal learning experience, whether in-person or online.
Key Features and Benefits of Sakai LMS
Sakai stands out due to its robust communication options and group-aware tools that facilitate easier interaction and collaboration. Some of its key strengths include:
- Open Source: Sakai is 100% open source, allowing for community-driven development and customization.
- Community-Driven: The Sakai community oversees, directs, manages, and advances the platform collaboratively.
- IMS LTI Compliance: Sakai is a leader in the development and implementation of the IMS LTI specification.
- Customizable Tools: Community members develop Sakai-specific tools and release them for others to use outside of the packaged Sakai release.
- Participatory Development: Institutions and individuals are encouraged to influence the product’s features, strategy, and development.
According to Alan Regan from Pepperdine University, colleges and universities shape the evolution of Sakai, ensuring that instructors and students' needs are met through collaboration and a collective voice.
Getting Started With Sakai 2020

Findings
The study revealed several key findings:
- Awareness: The extent of awareness of the Sakai LMS tools was moderate, with users primarily becoming aware through their tutors and the orientation program.
- Utilization: Some Sakai tools were underutilized due to a lack of awareness.
- Usage Extent: The extent of use of the Sakai LMS was relatively low.
Challenges
Several challenges contributed to the low usage of the Sakai LMS:
- Inadequate training on how to use the platform
- System errors
- Inability to access the Sakai platform at the point of need
- Difficulty in getting access to the internet
- Slow internet connectivity
These challenges highlight areas for improvement to enhance the user experience and effectiveness of the Sakai LMS at the University of Ghana.
Implications and Recommendations
This study is valuable for education practitioners, management of Distance Education, policymakers, and learning management system developers, especially in the context of the COVID-19 era. Addressing the identified challenges and improving awareness and training can significantly enhance the adoption and effectiveness of the Sakai LMS for distance learning students at the University of Ghana.
