University of Energy and Natural Resources, Sunyani: A Comprehensive Overview

The University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) in Sunyani, Ghana, stands as a public-funded institution committed to providing leadership and expertise in the management of energy and natural resources. Officially established on December 31, 2011, through Act 830 of the Parliament of Ghana, UENR aims to be a center of excellence in these critical fields.

Establishment and Development

In anticipation of the university's establishment, then-President J. E. A Mills formed a National Task Force Planning Committee on January 8, 2010. This committee was tasked with developing, organizing, and supervising the implementation of the establishment program for two new universities in the Volta and Brong Ahafo (now Bono) Regions. Samuel Kofi Sefah-Dedeh, former Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Services at the University of Ghana, chaired the 24-member Task Force, with Christine Amoako-Nuamah from the Office of the President serving as the convener.

Following the committee's recommendations, President J.E.A Mills inaugurated the commencement of the University in Sunyani on February 8, 2011. Furthermore, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) ceded its Faculty of Forest Resources Technology campus to UENR in a ceremony held in Sunyani on June 7, 2012.

Campuses and Facilities

The university operates on a multi-campus model, with three campuses currently located in Sunyani, Nsoatre, and Dormaa Ahenkro. The School of Engineering is situated on the Nsoatre campus, spanning approximately 2,000 acres. The School of Agriculture and Technology and Geosciences occupies around 2,000 acres of land on the Dormaa campus. Additionally, UENR has four field training stations in Mim, Bronsankoro, and Kyeraa for students in Agriculture and Forest Resources Management, and one in Bui for Engineering students.

Admission for Mature Students

For mature applicants, the following criteria apply:

  1. Applicants must be at least 25 years old at the time of application, providing proof of age with a birth certificate or any legitimate documentary evidence.
  2. Applicants should have at least credit passes in English Language and Mathematics in SSSCE/WASSCE or any other nationally recognized standard High School level examinations.
  3. In lieu of such qualification, applicants must pass a Mature Students’ Entrance Examination conducted by the University in English Language, Mathematics and Aptitude Test.

Application Process

To apply to UENR, prospective students should follow these steps:

  • Obtain application forms from Regional and some selected POST OFFICES throughout the country.
  • Complete the on-line application registration using the serial number on the Admission Form.
  • Attach a printed copy to the completed Forms and submit to any GHANA POST OFFICE.
  • Completed Application Forms must be accompanied by a processing fee of $ 150 USD.

Additional Information

  • A Fee-Paying Facility can be accessed when an applicant does not meet the Competitive Requirements and CUT-OFF Points but satisfy Minimum Entry Requirements of Aggregate 24/36 or better.
  • Prospective students who may wish to be considered for hostel accommodation are to indicate the request on their Application Form.
  • Admission to the University is transparently administered without any other considerations.
