The Federal University of Abuja (UNIABUJA) was established in 1988 in Abuja, Nigeria's administrative and political capital. It is a dual-mode university for conventional and distance learning programs.
In December 2024, the university was renamed Yakubu Gowon University.
History of the University of Abuja
The institution was founded on January 1, 1988, under Decree No. 110 of 1992 (as amended). It was designed to operate as a dual-mode university to accommodate both regular students and those in distance learning programs.
UNIABUJA officially started academic activities in 1990 with a small student population. The university initially operated from a temporary site in Gwagwalada, Abuja, before gradually moving to its permanent site.
Campuses and Faculties
The Federal University of Abuja has two campuses; the main campus is in Abuja, and the second is in Gwagwalada FCT. This federal university has twelve faculties. The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences are the biggest and have the most departments.

Admission Requirements
Undergraduate Admission Requirements
Undergraduates at the 100 level should meet the following University of Abuja admission requirements:
- You must score at least a credit pass in five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics (not more than two sittings). Three of the credit passes must be in subjects relevant to the degree course applied.
- You must attain the acceptable JAMB cut-off mark and UTME score.
- You must have attained UNIABUJA's post-UTME exam (the university's departmental cut-off mark).
A Direct Entry (DE) admission candidate must have at least two (2) ‘A’ Level passes, or equivalent in addition to five (5) credit passes in other subjects (including English Language and Mathematics) at the ordinary level (WAEC, NECO, GCE, NABTEB and Grade II).
- A credit pass in O'Level English Language is required for all courses.
- A credit in Mathematics is required for all science-based courses.

- You must have credit passes in five (5) subjects, including English Language and Mathematics at the ordinary level (WAEC, NECO, GCE, NABTEB, and Grade II), obtained at no more than two (2) sittings.
For admission into any UNIABUJA PhD program:
- You must have obtained a weighted average score of 60% or a letter ‘B’ grade in the Master’s degree relevant to the field of study.
- You should have five (5) subject credit passes, including English Language and Mathematics at the ordinary level (WAEC, NECO, GCE, NABTEB, and Grade II), obtained at no more than two (2) sittings.
