Tintswalo Atlantic: An Exclusive Retreat in Cape Town

If you find yourself visiting South Africa, Cape Town will undoubtedly be on your itinerary. This city, where urban life meets the sea, has become a major attraction for international travelers seeking more from Africa than just safaris. With its incredible food and world-class hotels, it’s no wonder many choose to begin their African journey in Cape Town.

Table Mountain, Cape Town

Tintswalo Atlantic is nestled in one of the top nature reserves in Cape Town, making it a dream getaway destination for nature and ocean lovers. As far as remote hotels go, you can’t get any more remote and isolated than Tintswalo Atlantic, and yet, the property is just a short 35-minute drive from Cape Town’s city center. The beauty of Cape Town is that it doesn’t take too long to get out of the city and into nature.

Tintswalo Atlantic is the only hotel located within the Table Mountain National Park, sitting on a pebbled beach at the edge of Hout Bay. Tucked away at the bottom of a long winding road off Chapman’s Peak Drive, Tintswalo Atlantic boasts one of the most exclusive addresses in Cape Town.

From the moment you descend down the twisting road past the mountain fynbos and the Atlantic Ocean, you are overcome with a feeling that you are about to experience something magical! The exclusive location of Tintswalo Atlantic is so intimate that it’s hard to believe that you are in Cape Town. The lodge is surrounded by nature, so there is a real sense of being disconnected from the outside world.

Arrival and Accommodation

Upon arrival at Tintswalo Atlantic, you are greeted at the top of the road in the parking lot just off Chapman’s Peak. This is commonly considered one of the most scenic drives in the world, and I have to say, I totally agree!

The exterior of Tintswalo Atlantic

Tintswalo Atlantic has ten elegantly styled luxury suites called Island Suites. For bigger groups such as families and generational travelers, there is a spacious unit comprising two Island Suites connected by an opulent common living area. Every suite is individually designed and inspired by some of the most beautiful islands around the world.

Each of the 12 rooms on site are decorated with their own unique flair. We stayed in the Kenya Suite which was certainly reminiscent of my travels in the Maasai Mara. This suite also has an extra-large deck right on the shoreline, making it difficult to ever want to leave the room! Each room is equipped with all the essentials, including a Nespresso machine, a study desk, a large bathtub, a television, and a bottle of wine on arrival.

Glass doors open to a private balcony offering panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and Sentinel mountain peak, while natural light floods the space. Each suite comes complete with a wood-burning fireplace, armchairs, and luxurious finishings.

Dining Experience

One of the highlights of our stay was dining at the restaurant. Meals at Tintswalo are served on the wooden deck which looks out on the horizon of the Atlantic Ocean. The fine dining on offer is truly a gastronomic experience, especially if you opt for the five-course tasting menu. As part of the tasting menu, guests can choose five dishes from a range of changing dishes on the menu.

Breakfast on the deck

There is also an a la carte menu on offer if you prefer a lighter meal. On our second evening, we opted for the a la carte menu, and the portions are still very generous. Breakfast was another highlight of our stay, served either in the restaurant or in the privacy of your ocean-facing suite. The options included yogurt and homemade granola, a selection of pastries, and eggs cooked any way you like.

Tintswalo Atlantic pays particular attention to each guest’s dietary requirements. The kitchen team creates wholesome and beautifully presented cuisine, complemented by an award-winning wine list. They even offer a delicious breakfast (and special vegan breakfast)!

Amenities and Activities

Perched on stilts between ancient milkwood trees, eight wood-and-glass suites and a two-bedroom presidential suite are so close to the pounding waves that it’s possible to toss pebbles into the rock pools from your private deck. Each room is inspired by an island around the world.
