Venture into the Heart of Africa to build routes through some of the continent’s most remote and desolate locales with the Ticket to Ride: Heart of Africa expansion! This expansion significantly changes the basic game in two distinct ways.

Head to the Heart of Africa for the first time in digital Ticket to Ride! Meet festival organiser Blessing Kipruto and griot Nnamdi Okpara as you travel across a variety of new terrains, building your train network on this vibrant map.

The rulebook explicitly mentions that the plastic carriage pieces and scoring markers from the main game are to be used. Anything not mentioned in the above list should be considered surplus to official requirements.

Includes:

  • Two New Characters - Explore Africa with festival organiser Blessing Kipruto and griot Nnamdi Okpara.
  • Two New Vehicles - Traverse the tricky terrain in the Safari Sights car or Fahagola railbus!
  • Two New Carriages - Take your animal buddies along for the ride with the Animal Trails carriage, or relax in the Stately Travels carriage.

Ticket to Ride is what I’d call a gateway game in that it’s easy to play and get started in more modern games instead of old classics. However, there are a ton of different versions and expansions so I thought it would be helpful to explain them all and catalog them in one spot!

New Terrain Cards

Utilise the new Terrain cards to double your points on a completed route! There are three types of Terrain cards to master:

  • Desert and Savanna: Covers yellow, orange, and red routes.
  • Jungle and Forest: Covers purple, blue, and green routes.
  • Mountain and Cliff: Covers white, grey, and black routes.

Set off in the historic Fahagola railbus or the Safari Sights car, coupled with either the Animal Trails or the Stately Travels carriages! Get ready for the adventure of your life in Ticket to Ride: Heart of Africa Expansion!

The bigger change was to the board. In all other versions of the game, I had tried not to have any city connect by more than one route of any color (except grey). But in this game, I wanted the cities to have as many routes of the same color into them as possible.

Heart of Africa is a very claustrophobic Ticket to Ride game and can get crowded very quickly. Players beware! The rules only have stations for the Europe map. None of the maps are broken by playing with stations, however.

Europe, USA, Africa, Switzerland, India, Asia, and Legendary Asia.

Ticket to Ride Series:

  1. I’ll start with the original Ticket to Ride, this game follows the gameplay described above without any variations.
  2. This version uses a map of the United States and is one of the simplest versions of Ticket to Ride.
