With no development 100 miles up or 60 miles down the beach, this is a beach and marine wilderness sanctuary unrivalled. Thonga Beach Lodge is a 24-bed luxury lodge and is an ideal destination to connect with one of Africa’s last pristine wilderness beaches and rediscover your place in it. The small and intimate Thonga Beach Lodge has twenty-four stylishly and cool eco sensitive thatched bush suites With either an ocean view or a forest view, you can be sure to feel immersed by nature.

Location and Setting

Thonga Beach Lodge is situated right on the Maputaland Coast in South Africa's Kwazulu-Natal region, on the eastern side of the country. The lodge is just meters from the beach, and is only a 30-minute drive from Lake Sibaya, which is Southern Africa's largest freshwater lake. The lake is part of the Isimangaliso Wetland Park, which is recognized as a World Heritage Site. The reserve is long and narrow, especially towards the north with a band of vegetated sand dunes running parallel to the coast, for the length of the reserve, separating the interior from the ocean. In the north, South Africa's largest freshwater lake, Lake Sibaya and four smaller interlinked lakes are found near Kosi Bay. The wilderness reserve's eastern boundary is formed by the Indian Ocean and the marine protected area extends outwards from the coastline, protecting both land and sea flora and fauna.

Accommodation

Thonga comprises 12 Robinson Crusoe style suites. The thatched en-suite rooms have been carefully constructed in the coastal dune forest to ensure minimum impact on the environment and guest privacy as well as offering breathtaking views of the natural surroundings. Natural materials of thatch, reeds and wood, sourced from the local area create a seamless flow, while providing authentic textures to the minimalist spaces. Each room is on a raised platform nestled among indigenous forest in undulating dunes. All suites are air-conditioned. Dreamy crisp linen and mosquito nets adorn the beds, while soft down-lighting creates a peaceful, serene ambience, perfect after a day under the African sun.

Lodge Facilities

The lodge facilities are designed to enhance your experience by complementing the exquisite surrounding wilderness, with comforts of a slightly more modern nature. The lounge, nestled high in the canopy of the dune forest, offers panoramic views of the Indian Ocean. You can also enjoy excellent cuisine, al fresco on the dining deck or beach deck overlooking the sea. Alternatively, enjoy sundowners in the bar lounge or the cool deck under the Coastal Milkwood trees.

Standing on the beach deck, we look down from the top of the dunes and along the golden sweep of sand that stretches away like an immense parenthesis to each side of us. Arriving at Thonga Beach Lodge, we inhale big lungfuls of bracing marine air, and feel the last of the city cobwebs being blown away.

Activities

Mabibi is a magical place of tranquil swimming bays and snorkeling reefs, coastal forests, grasslands, bush, shimmering lakes and sandy beaches. Thonga Beach Lodge offers a rare close-up look at an amazing array of ecosystems, with gourmet food and beautiful accommodation to boot.

Snorkelling with Dolphins Thonga beach Lodge

Its clear, warm waters offer snorkeling and offshore scuba diving, some of the best scuba diving in Africa. Activities include turtle tracking, fishing, snorkeling, scuba diving and guided wilderness walks. The snorkeling and scuba diving are incredible - with a wealth of underwater seascapes and prolific marine flora and fauna, the scuba diving here is really very special. Just off the shore is a shallow reef which runs the length of this protected coastline, and is home to a huge number of sub-tropical fish including parrot fish, blue surgeons, and moorish idols. The lodge offers scuba diving training in its own swimming pool with excellent instructors on hand. The manager, Gerard, lets us have a few moments to drink in the scale of the view. He tells us that the tide has turned, and points out where the waves are breaking over dark, jagged rocks just out to sea. This is Pine Reef - a great place to snorkel at low tide. I smile - that’s our afternoon activity organised. I love the idea of being able to run down the gently sloping beach into the water, and arrive almost immediately at a reef busy with tropical fish. For now, he enthusiastically tells us about the option of an early morning kayaking outing on nearby Lake Sibaya, ideal for listening to the many waterbirds that live there, and looking out for languid hippo and basking crocodile. Being within a stone’s throw of both the ocean and Lake Sibaya greatly increases the range of activities on offer, and we fully intend to make the most of them. We’ve timed our trip to coincide with turtle-tracking season, as well as the best diving.

Commitment to Ecology

Thonga Beach Lodge prides itself on its light ecological footprint and we’re happy that all we leave behind are our own imprints in the sand, soon to be swept away by the breakers of the Indian Ocean.
