Day 1: Tangier to Chefchaouen
You’ve made it to Tangier and, hopefully, made it across the border more easily than we did. Wonderful! Just know that going from Tangier to Marrakech can be its own adventure. Welcome to Tangier-the gateway between Europe and Africa. Located close to the south of Spain, visit the medina (old quarter) and take a paseo to enjoy a stroll along the promenade. Or, travel straight on to the blue-hued city of Chefchaouen in the Rif Mountains.

Our friendly local guide will be there to greet you and assist you throughout your trip. Upon your arrival, we will embark on a scenic drive to Chefchaouen, a charming town nestled in the picturesque Rif Mountains of northern Morocco. Once in Chefchaouen, settle into your comfortable accommodation at a cozy hotel or riad, surrounded by the town’s famous blue-painted streets.
Enjoy the scenic route, stopping along the way to hike (two to three hours) to the Cascades d'Akchour (Waterfalls of Akchour). Chefchaouen offers endless winding, narrow streets, and picturesque buildings. Though non-Muslims are not permitted to enter, the Grand Mosque is still worth a visit. From there, explore the nearby kasbah (old fortification) and tour the garden, museum, and some of the old prison cells. Today, you will go on an immersive full-day exploration of Fes, a city well known for its rich history and vibrant culture. As one of Morocco’s imperial cities, Fes is a heart of cultural and religious activities, offering a plethora of historical treasures waiting to be discovered. Begin your journey by driving to see the gates of the Royal Palace, setting the stage for a day filled with exploration and enlightenment. Train Travel Tips
After seeing that the prices weren’t all that much different (350 MAD for a couchette (sleeper) vs. 215 MAD for the cheaper bus company; a $15 USD difference), we opted for the train. Mostly for the experience since neither of us had been on an overnight train before. Tangier has a fairly basic train station that is just outside the downtown area, a short taxi trip away. This is good because you may have difficulty purchasing your tickets without going to the train station.
Since you’re in Tangier, a fairly bustling port city that gets a lot of international visitors, one might expect to find a dearth of clerks who speak English. Since this area used to be part of the Spanish protectorate, there’s always Spanish then, right? That would be nice, but it took 3 different languages for me to buy our tickets. Had my French been fluent, it wouldn’t have been a problem. Since my French wasn’t . . . Oh, they may tempt you and take you all the way through a purchasing process, but don’t hold your breath. It’s easier to go to the station.
If you don’t want the adventure of buying your ticket through the guichet, aka ticket window, there are several ticket vending machines in the station which are quite easy to use. If you don’t have a card with a chip in it, though, you’ll probably need to be prepared to pay cash (although unchipped cards do work at the ticket window). You won’t need exact change which makes it handy. Couchettes can sell out quickly during holidays, weekends, and peak season, so it’s a good idea to buy your tickets from Tangier to Marrakech as far in advance as you can.
General Train Travel Tips
- It is wise to carry toilet paper with you when traveling in Morocco.
- An eye mask and ear plugs might be a very good idea.
