A Prayer for African American Fathers on Father's Day

Father's Day is a special occasion to honor and celebrate the fathers in our lives. For the African American community, this day holds particular significance, recognizing the strength, resilience, and love that African American fathers provide. Here are several prayers and reflections to honor these men who play such vital roles.

God of Mercy and Love, we place our African American and African Families before You today. May we be proud of our history and never forget those who paid a great price for our liberation. Bless us one by one and keep our hearts and minds fixed on higher ground. Help us to live for you and not for ourselves, and may we cherish and proclaim the gift of life.

Bless our parents, guardians and grandparents, relatives and friends. Give us the amazing grace to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Help us, as Your children, to live in such a way that the beauty and greatness of authentic love is reflected in all that we say and do. Give a healing anointing to those less fortunate, especially the motherless, the fatherless, the broken, the sick and the lonely. Bless our departed family members and friends.

May they be led into the light of Your dwelling place where we will never grow old, where we will share the fullness of redemption and shout the victory for all eternity. This we ask in the Precious Name of Jesus, our Savior and Blessed Assurance. Prayer composed by FR.

Celebrating the Contributions of Fathers

It is important to acknowledge and praise the diverse roles that fathers play. Let us praise those fathers who have striven to balance the demands of work, marriage, and children with an honest awareness of both joy and sacrifice. Let us praise those fathers who, lacking a good model for a father, have worked to become a worthy and virtuous father.

Let us praise those fathers who, by their own account, were not always there for their children, but who continue to offer those children, now grown, their love and support. As well, let us pray for those fathers who have been wounded by words and actions of their children. Let us praise those men who have no children, but cherish the next generation as if they were their own. Let us praise those men who have "fathered" us in their role as mentors and guides.

God, our Father Bless these men, that they may find strength as fathers. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, their sons and daughters, may honor them always with a spirit of profound respect. We give our thanks, Creator God, for the fathers in our lives. Fatherhood does not come with a manual, and reality teaches us that some fathers excel while others fail.

We ask for Your blessings for them all and forgiveness where it is needed. This Father's Day we remember the many sacrifices fathers make for their children and families, and the ways--both big and small--they lift children to achieve dreams thought beyond reach. So too, we remember all those who have helped fill the void when fathers pass early or are absent; grandfathers and uncles, brothers and cousins, teachers, pastors and coaches and the women of our families.

For those who are fathers, we ask for wisdom and humility in the face of the task of parenting. Give them the strength to do well by their children and by You. In Your Holy name, O God, we pray. Amen. - Rev.

A Prayer for Strength and Guidance

Heavenly Father, Today we ask You to bless our earthly fathers for the many times they reflected the love, strength, generosity, wisdom and mercy that You exemplify in Your relationship with us, Your children. We honor our fathers for putting our needs above their own convenience and comfort; for teaching us to show courage and determination in the face of adversity; for challenging us to move beyond self-limiting boundaries; for modeling the qualities that would turn us into responsible, principled, caring adults.

Not all our fathers lived up to these ideals. Give them the grace to acknowledge and learn from their mistakes. Give us the grace to extend to them the same forgiveness that you offer us all. Help us to resist the urge to stay stuck in past bitterness, instead, moving forward with humility and peace of heart.

We ask your blessing on those men who served as father figures in our lives when our biological fathers weren't able to do so. May the love and selflessness they showed us be returned to them in all their relationships, and help them to know that their influence has changed us for the better. Give new and future fathers the guidance they need to raise happy and holy children, grounded in a love for God and other people - and remind these fathers that treating their wives with dignity, compassion and respect is one of the greatest gifts they can give their children.

We pray that our fathers who have passed into the next life have been welcomed into Your loving embrace, and that our family will one be day be reunited in your heavenly kingdom. In union with St. Joseph, whom you entrusted with Your Son, we ask Your generous blessings today and every day. Amen.

The Essence of Fatherhood

Heavenly Father, you entrusted your Son Jesus, the child of Mary, to the care of Joseph, an earthly father. Bless all fathers as they care for their families. Give them strength and wisdom, tenderness and patience; support them in the work they have to do, protecting those who look to them, as we look to you for love and salvation, through Jesus Christ our rock and defender.

Let us pray. O God, as you have inspired men from the beginning of time to live lives of faith and hope, so now, create in our men a new zeal for wisdom, repentance, passionate service, unconditional love, and Christian values. Grant that our men will be reflections of Jesus Christ, hungering for the Word and thirsting after your righteousness! In your blessed name we humbly pray. Amen.

One: The world’s human community began with one man. The redemption of humanity was wrought by one man. Today, we celebrate the contributions of strong, godly men to our community. All: We celebrate men who, with the wisdom of Solomon, seek God’s perfect plan for their lives and the lives they influence.

One: We appreciate men who, with the spirit of David, seek repentance, as men after God’s own heart. All: We acknowledge men who, with the obedience of Abraham, follow God’s direction, help shape the lives of their families, and ultimately change the world. One: We honor men who, like Peter, are fallible yet passionate about serving the Lord and fervently building his Kingdom.

All: As Joseph cared for his father and brothers, we care for the men of our community by generously sharing our resources, our time, and our unconditional love. One: We pray for men who have the inner and outward strength of Samson, but have lost their way. All: We’re grateful for men who, like the apostle Paul, teach us Christian principles and values. Today, we celebrate men who strive in all things to be like Jesus, exhibiting his character and his love.

Loving and Merciful God, whose power is beyond our scope and whose wisdom is beyond our understanding, we turn to you in faith assured that you know our every emotion and are aware of our every need. Our thoughts and prayers today are turned towards our fathers. For those whose fathers have increased the joy in their lives, we give you thanks.

For those whose father’s presence is greatly missed, may we take time to gratefully recall all they have given to us, providing for us in our growing. For those whose fathers have recently lost or who are facing the imminent loss of their own fathers, may they find comfort in their grief, hope in their despair, and courage in the love that their fathers have given them. We give thanks, God, for these good men who sustain and support us in our living, who love us no matter what! What a blessing they are to all who know them!

We give thanks to you, O God, for all those whose gift for fatherhood is so strong that they have allowed their caring to spill over into the lives of others, providing the guidance and stability, the nurture and the love needed. How distressing it is for us to consider that not all fathers have been good fathers. We pray, compassionate God, for those whose father has been a source of hurt and pain, for all those for whom one or more members of their family has caused them to suffer. May their wounds be healed. May they find in you, in us, in others, the nurturing, sustaining love that is needed for their growth and well-being.

We recall with sadness fathers who are separated from their children though life choices made by them or others. Give them the insight and wisdom, the courage and perseverance to parent in whatever creative and life-giving ways are open to them. Give them the courage to make the decisions which allow their children to prevail. We remember to you single fathers and mothers who struggle to be both parents to their children-to provide all the emotional, physical, and spiritual needs without the constant support of a spouse. May they find the strength, courage, and wisdom for their task.

We pray for those fathers whose relationships with their children have been difficult or disappointing. We pray, too, for those who have been denied a chance to be fathers, and for those whose years of parenting have been cut short by the loss of a child.

Call to Worship

One: Our relationships with our fathers are complicated. Many: For some of us, our father's love is like God's love -- too deep, too long, too wide, too strong to measure. One: Some of our dads are here; some were never here. Many: For some of us, God's love fills in the empty spaces our fathers left behind. One: All of us are shaped by the relationship or lack of relationship with our fathers.

All: On this day when we remember what it means to have a father or be a father, we recognize the importance of fathers in our communities. We pledge as a congregation to love and nurture the fathers among us so that they will manifest the love of God in all that they do. Loving God, you who are our father and our mother, we thank you that you have shown us how important it is to follow your example as we grow in faith. Teach us to be obedient to your will, respecting you as children ought. Thank you for your mercy despite our disobedience. Strengthen us to stand up against the challenges of this world, honoring your name and trusting your grace. In the Name of your Son, we pray. Amen.

In the African American community there has long been a cry for more men to step up and take responsibility as fathers. On this Sunday, although the need continues, we do not continue that cry. Instead we salute those Godly men who are supporting families and communities.

The real Father-force is responsibility. It’s standing up and being the man. The Father-force is a caring force. The Father-force does not want to be something that’s impressive to someone else. The Father-force wants to be impressive to his own family, his own children. They don’t want their sons to look up to their boss. They want their sons to look up to them. --Dr.

This day, let fathers speak! Plan an afternoon service of spoken word delivered by fathers. The spoken word topics can cover all aspects of fatherhood (i.e., fatherly spiritual leadership in the home, fathers as providers, fathers as teachers, etc.).

Our fathers have shown us the way to you. Because of their example, we have made precious your precepts. Our fathers, when knocked down, have always looked to you for strength to get back up. They have leaned on your everlasting arms to care and provide for their families.
