Tamarina Golf & Spa Boutique Hotel Mauritius: A Comprehensive Review

Nestled near Tamarin Bay, the Tamarina Golf & Spa Boutique Hotel offers an upscale retreat with an 18-hole golf course, a driving range, and private lessons. This beachfront resort provides beach towels and loungers on a private white sand beach, where a beach bar beckons after windsurfing nearby. Guests rave about their stay, highlighting the exceptional service and serene environment.

Tamarina lies on a small peninsula reached by private road at the far end of Tamarin Bay, overlooking Tamarin Mountain. This unspoiled salt-and-pepper beach is the island’s only surf spot (June to August) - and with no coral reef, it’s sandy underfoot for swimming. It is a public beach and therefore busy at weekends, although it's generally quiet on weekdays.

The hotel lies just four miles from Tamarin village. This barefoot luxury hotel started life as a beach club for golf villa owners, with its thatched rooms added later. Atop the peninsula, the main deck, restaurants and bars are lit by candles at night, and feature sea-facing sun loungers on a sandy ledge for chilled sunsets. Rooms encircle a cascading infinity pool with cabanas, and sun loungers stretch out onto the sand.

Overview

Unwind with a sports massage or reflexology at the spa, practice yoga at the gym, or simply lounge by the pool. The full-service spa offers daily relaxation with aromatherapy, hot stone massages, and facials. Steam rooms, yoga, and bay views enhance the wellness journey.

Curated rooms feature premium bedding and rainfall showerheads for pure comfort. Service is friendly and reasonably efficient, although the property is now in the hands of the owners, rather than an experienced hotel management team. There is kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and catamaran cruises in the bay, which can be booked via the hotel reception.

Rooms

All 50 Deluxe rooms are the same size, with balconies, separate toilets and showers, African-style lamps and a bohemian touch in their colourful bed throws and cushions. Of those, 30 rooms are garden-view, which are comfortable though a bit uninspiring.

Tamarina Golf & Spa Boutique Hotel offers 50 accommodations, which are accessible via exterior corridors and feature minibars and safes. Rooms open to furnished balconies. Each accommodation is individually furnished and decorated. Beds feature premium bedding. 32-inch LCD televisions come with satellite channels. Bathrooms include showers with rainfall showerheads, and hair dryers. Guests can surf the web using the complimentary wireless Internet access. Business-friendly amenities include desks and phones. Additionally, rooms include coffee/tea makers and ceiling fans. A nightly turndown service is provided and housekeeping is offered daily. Amenities available on request include irons/ironing boards.

Dining

Of Tamarina’s two restaurants around the main deck, La Madrague - on the edge of the peninsula - is the most charming. Its à la carte menu features Mauritian fusion dishes: think venison empanadas, Tamarin Bay ceviche and vanilla tea crème brûlée, alongside Creole specialities and vegan options. There is a rather incongruous circular white lounge next to the main bar, and feet-in-the-sand dining tables under Bedouin-style canvas, with cultural performances on Saturdays.

Breakfast and Dinner is served under trees and with sand under your feet you can enjoy the view over the ocean .

Golf Course

Tamarina Golf Club Mauritius - clubhouse tour

Unveiled in 2007, the course at Tamarina Golf, Spa & Beach Club was fashioned on the southwest savannah coast of Mauritius, inside the first residential golf estate to open on the island. Thankfully, even though many of the holes are laid out around properties, the houses are positioned a discreet distance from the fairways, allowing golfers to proceed round the course unhindered.

The course was constructed to USGA specification on a 107-acre site and it occupies a beautiful spot next to where the Rempart River reaches the Indian Ocean. The surrounding mountain range - which includes the three jagged peaks of Trois Mamelles - forms a very impressive backdrop to the golfing action.

Highlight holes at Tamarina include a couple of memorable par fives: On the front nine, the 5th (“Yemen”) calls for a demanding tee shot over the River Rempart and on the back nine, the risk/reward 11th (“Snake Eyes”) invites a shorter route over two bunkers in order to allow a simpler approach to the pin.

According to golf course architect Rodney Wright:

"Tamarina was developed by Medine Sugar Estate, a leading diversified agri-businesses in Mauritius and it was the first Integrated Resort Scheme (IRS) to be built in Mauritius. IRS projects provide a legal vehicle designed to allow foreigners to purchase and own property in Mauritius.

The course is the heart of a residential/golf/beach resort that lies between Mauritius’s iconic Mt. Rempart and Tamarin Bay, the famous surfing destination. The setting is dramatic, having the look and feel of an African bushveld and Tamarina gets its name from the multitude of Tamarind trees growing throughout this part of the island.

The design brief was to create a true championship golf course that could also be enjoyed by all levels of players and at 7,524 yards from the tips, the challenge is obvious. The secrets to accomplishing the enjoyment part are fairness, variety, the abundance of tee positions and memorability.

We were also to construct the best greens in Mauritius and these were built to the latest USGA recommendations, pioneering the use of “Champion” ultra-dwarf Bermuda grass putting surfaces.

Any golf course designer worth his salt will incorporate the natural features of a site into the golf design and at Tamarina, the site defined the course design! Aside from the large stands of mature trees, three predominant natural features dictated the course design:

Firstly, there’s Mount Rempart, an omnipresent landmark that dominates the landscape and is visible from practically everywhere, providing an unforgettable backdrop for much of the golf course, particularly on holes 3, 4, 6 and 7.

Secondly, the River Rempart cuts a dramatic deep gorge through the property and it cried out to be utilized as a golf course feature! Hole 5, 6 and 18 play across, alongside and up to the river gorge, respectively.

Thirdly, the Barachoise Estuary forms the stunning setting for the “signature” Par three hole 13, which features a twenty-five metre elevation drop from tee to green.

The Tamarina course was a joy to design but the true beauty of Tamarina is the place itself. Enjoying a round of golf there is only part of the experience."
