A Picturesque Town
Robertson is a quaint little town out of dreamland. The roads are lined with jacaranda trees which blossom in summers and paint the town in a bright shade of purple. The canna lilies bloom dotting the town with specks of orange, yellow and red. One would seldom see a more picturesque town.
Robertson is in the Western Cape, about 160 km away from Cape Town. The roads are lined with jacaranda trees which blossom in summers and paint the town in a bright shade of purple.
Most people visiting Cape Town spend a while touring Paarl and Stellenbosch to tick wine tasting on the list of must-do things in Cape Town. Not many people spend a day in the wine valley of Robertson.

Getting There and Getting Around
We traversed the Western Cape as a road trip. Hence, getting to Robertson was a zip zap zoom drive for us and we recommend hiring a car to to explore the town and vineyards around it.
- Get your own wheels: We recommend hiring a car from Cape Town. Public transport is not too efficient between cities.
- Get a GPS: There are some narrow roads and then there are some dirt roads.

We loved staying at Gubas de Hoek which is centrally located in Robertson. Our garden cottage had two bedrooms, a large living area, full kitchen, big walk in wardrobe for all our luggage, desk area and bathroom. It’s a great size and well presented. The best part, however, was the large, private backyard area complete with sand pit and toys.

Wine Tasting and Vineyard Experiences
As you wander through the valley, you'll discover a delightful blend of well-known wineries and cozy restaurants.
There are approximately a dozen wineries in Robertson - take your pick. We went by our host’s recommendation to enjoy a diner and watch the sunset at Fraai Uitzicht. What a gorgeous setting! Dinner on the patio with dim lights, watching the sun go down. This has been the most beautiful sunset dinner that we have had.
Another vineyard that I remember fondly is Viljoensdrift vineyard. Situated on the banks of the Breede River, the vineyard has its own boat. Taste some wine, pick up a bottle, get a picnic lunch packed and set sail.
Viljoensdrift vineyard
Our pick of the wine farms in Robertson is Viljoensdrift. Viljoensdrift is located right by a river and they take advantage of it by offering one hour river cruises complete with picnic tables and chairs. It’s incredibly well done. They put the food you buy in a picnic basket complete with chopping board and knife. There are wine buckets with ice and glasses for the wine. We loved our cruise. It was a lovely leisurely hour up and down the river with lovely views. The winery also has a playground area with adjacent picnic tables.

Van Loveren is another of the Robertson wineries that is worth adding to your list of things to do in Robertson South Africa. It’s a lovely wine farm that also hosts a great garden. We loved the wine tasting menu most of all as there were lots of choices all with accompanying snacks. Since we had just had lunch on the boat cruise, this worked especially well. If you are travelling in Robertson with kids, this Robertson wine tasting works especially well as they have a kid option.
Wine tasting in quite a few of the vineyards is free of cost. We went wine tasting in 3 vineyards and typically ended up trying 3-4 wines at each stop. It is here that our love affair with sauvignon blanc began… and it continues till date!
The staff in most vineyards is happy to show you around and detail the wine making process to help you make an informed choice. We picked up a few bottles as well - very cheap, especially when compared to wine prices in India. I remember that we spent less than USD 2 for a bottle of really good white wine!
Robertson was my first tryst with wine tasting… and there have been numerous post that.
Tips for Wine Tasting:
- Shop for wine: I can’t say it enough… buy a few bottles at the vineyard.
- Do not drink and drive: It is easy to lose track of how much alcohol you have consumed when you are on a wine tasting spree.
- Take the tour in the vineyard: Take the tour on the vineyard and understand the wine making process. Learn which wine pairs best with which food. What should your cheese platter consist of?
Robertson is a Winelands love story. Situated in the shadow of the majestic Langeberg mountains with the Breede River as its life blood, Robertson is the western gateway to the Route 62. Only a leisurely 1 ½ hour drive from Cape Town.

One of the top things to do in Montagu, South Africa is to enjoy the Avalon Springs. The pools at Avalon Springs are filled with 43 degrees Celsius water from underground and it’s known for its healing powers.
Another option for a visit to Protea Farm is the Potjeikos lunch. You can just go for the lunch or do it before or after a tractor tours (which currently run at 10 am and 2 pm). The Potjeikos serves a range of dishes of meat and vegetables, stewed slowly in cast iron pots over hot coals, along with bread. There’s pudding and ice cream for dessert. Water, juice and wine are available, as well as tea and coffee. The food is delicious and we all enjoyed it. The kids especially loved the dessert (unsurprisingly). J and I really liked the breads.
At the top, you can see all the way to Robertson on the floor of the neighboring Brea Valley. The top of the ridge is 1500m above sea level and the climb covers over 500m of that ascent. If you’re after what to do in Montagu to get high then this is it. There are some stops along the way for photos as well as a chance to enjoy a pear and apple. Our tip is to get there early if you can, these rides are popular.
We visited this area with our three kids aged 5, 7 and 13 months old. The Montagu and Robertson activities work very well with kids. The Protea tractor tour was a big hit. Mr 5, in particular, lapped it up and had a huge smile on his face most of the time.
