Historical Context

Tangier, the city where the port is located, boasts a rich history shaped by numerous civilizations. Founded as a Phoenician colony as early as the 10th century BCE, Tangier has been a strategic town and trading center for centuries. The Carthaginians developed it into an important port by the 5th century BCE.

Over the centuries, Tangier came under the control of various powers, including the Romans, Vandals, and Arabs. In the 17th century, it was even part of the English crown as part of a dowry. Tangier's geographical location made it a center of European diplomatic and commercial rivalry in Morocco in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

In 1923, Tangier became an international zone managed by colonial powers, attracting diplomats, spies, bohemians, writers, and businessmen. By the early 21st century, Tangier was undergoing rapid development and modernisation.
