Nestled high in the hills at 2,161 meters above sea level on the southern edge of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, Nkuringo Gorilla Lodge offers an unparalleled experience for those seeking an unforgettable adventure in Uganda. This review delves into the various aspects of the lodge, from its stunning location and luxurious accommodations to the exceptional gorilla trekking experiences and cultural immersions.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Stunning Location and First Impressions
The area is special, stunning. The most beautiful scenery I've ever seen. Reaching Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge feels like arriving at the edge of the world, where the forest meets the sky. Staying here is like stepping into the pages of National Geographic, with a dash of luxury thrown in for good measure.
The staff welcomed me with smiles that said, “You’ve made it! Now, let’s show you something amazing.” And boy, did they deliver.
Planning Your Journey
Nkuringo Lodge is located at the southern edge of Bwindi Forest National Park. The nearest international airports are Entebbe in Uganda and Kigali in Rwanda. Travelers flying into Entebbe, for example, may choose to take a second flight to the property’s nearest airstrip, Kisoro (approx. 90 minutes). After that, the property is another 90 minutes from Kisoro by road transfer.

Luxurious Accommodations
Guest accommodation at Nkuringo consists of 5 standard garden cottages, 6 deluxe garden cottages, 3 villas, and 4 forest suites. My cottage was the kind of place that makes you rethink every hotel choice you’ve ever made.
Every garden cottage room has a veranda too, with views of the Virunga Mountains and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. All rooms have comfy beds, snug rugs, and well-appointed en-suite facilities including flush toilet, washbasin, and shower.
Villa Option
The villa option is fabulous for families or groups. The two-bedroom villas are separate, but it is possible to interconnect them if you prefer. Highlights of the Nkuringo villa include a seating area with cozy fireplace and a spacious veranda with outstanding forest views.
Exceptional Service and Hospitality
The welcome from a gorgeous team was lovely, food great and the lodge spot on. Service was great. The team looked after our every need, all with a smile - hot water bottles in the bed and a fire lit in our room each night was going beyond. The location, quality of rooms, food and staff are superb.
Dining Experience
A few steps lead up to the main buildings. Interesting local artwork hangs on the walls and there are plenty of artifacts to admire. The restaurant and bar area features variously sized tables flanked by wooden chairs, some positioned to give amazing views across Bwindi’s tracts of forest.

Even the food is locally sourced, and the eco-friendly vibe made me feel like an eco-warrior, just by association.
The Unforgettable Gorilla Trekking Experience
Gorilla trekking in Bwindi is a full-on, heart-and-soul experience. Waking up the following day felt like Labor Day-if Labor Day involved trudging through dense jungle and coming face to face with a 400-pound silverback. After a hearty breakfast (because you do not want to face a gorilla on an empty stomach), I joined a group of equally eager trekkers.
Our guide, who was basically the Bear Grylls of Bwindi, gave us the lowdown. No sudden movements, no flash photography, and definitely no trying to impress the silverback with your Tarzan impression. Got it.
As we entered the forest, we felt like we were entering another world. The trek was no walk in the park-there were roots to trip over, vines to duck under, and sweat to wipe from our brows.
When we first spotted the silverback, I had a moment where I seriously considered calling him “Sir.” He was that impressive. Sitting there, cool as a cucumber, he gave off a vibe that said, “Yeah, I’m the boss around here.” The rest of the gorilla family was equally fascinating-moms tending to their babies, juveniles goofing around like kids at recess.

Gorilla Trekking in Uganda | Bwindi impenetrable Forest | EVERYTHING you need to know
At one point, a mother gorilla came so close that I could see curiosity in her eyes. That hour flew by faster than I wanted it to, and when the guide said it was time to go, I may have pouted just a little. But as we trekked back, I couldn’t help but feel a profound sense of awe.
Two different types of gorilla experience are offered. The first is a trek beginning at 8:30am and involving a maximum of eight travelers, while the second is a “habituation experience” starting at 7:30 am and open to four travelers max. Both take place on the Nkuringo hillside and in Rushaga, which lies within the southeastern sector of Bwindi. Lodge guides lead the quest to find a group of gorillas.
Once a group has been located, the trek activity allows for an hour to observe the magnificent mammals, while the habituation activity allows four hours. It is a delight to watch the gorillas in their natural habitat. Hiking through the forest can be rather exhausting at times, but your efforts will be richly rewarded!
A note of caution, gorilla treks from Nkuringo are some of the most physically demanding in the whole of Bwindi, so be prepared for a physical adventure. However, there are easier routes also accessible from here, albeit by way of a one-hour drive to the departure point in Rushaga.
Immersing in the Batwa Culture
After the high of the gorilla trek, I decided to take it down a notch and get to know the locals-the Batwa people. Now, these aren’t your average neighbors; the Batwa are the original forest dwellers, the true OGs of Bwindi. They’ve lived in harmony with the forest for centuries, long before it was cool (or a national park).
Nkuringo Safaris set me up with a guide who knew the Batwa like family. The Batwa took us through their daily life, showing us how they used to hunt, gather, and basically make Bear Grylls look like a novice.
The elders shared stories that were equally fascinating and heartbreaking-tales of a life that’s slowly slipping away as the modern world encroaches. I left the village feeling both humbled and inspired, with a renewed respect for the people who know this land better than anyone.
Exploring Bwindi on Foot: The Nature Hike
When they called it a “walk,” I wasn’t entirely prepared for what lay ahead. This wasn’t a stroll through the park but a trek across Bwindi, through some of the densest forests you’ll hike. The forest was alive with sounds-birds, insects, the occasional grunt from some unseen animal.
Hills rolled out like green waves, disappearing into the horizon, and I couldn’t help but think, “This is what it’s all about.” The final stretch of the hike was a beast-moderately steep, slippery, and relentless. But when we finally emerged into Buhoma, sweaty and mud-caked, I felt like I’d just conquered Everest.
Additional Activities
From this comfortable base camp, you can enjoy a fine assortment of activities:
- Nkuringo offers gentler walks too, including strolls through other parts of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and through local farmland.
- Special bird-watching excursions are also possible.
- Visit and meet local tribespeople…and they will teach you about the forest and show you their way of living. You can also visit local homesteads.
Why Choose Nkuringo Gorilla Lodge?
Has just 16 rooms, providing a tranquil safari experience with few other visitors. Uses a generator for power in the absence of sunshine. Does not have a swimming pool or fitness center for the right reasons.
From the towering silverbacks to the welcoming smiles of the Batwa, everything about this trip made me feel more connected to the world in ways I hadn’t expected. In this luxury escape, nature conservation, community, and unbelievable amenities collide.
