Experiencing Nairobi's Nightlife
One thing I absolutely love about this city is that there’s always something going on - whether it’s a live music night, a rooftop party, or just a buzzing bar full of friendly faces. There’s something for everyone here. Whether you’re in the mood for a laid-back drink with a live acoustic set, an all-out club night, or something totally different like board games and cocktails, Nairobi’s got you covered.
It’s the one city in the world where you can start with a quiet sundowner overlooking a national park filled with lions, rhinos and giraffes and then end up in a super trendy club dancing to the latest Afrobeats.

- The Alchemist: An institution on the Nairobi nightlife scene! It’s more than a bar-it’s an experience. Think food trucks, live music, open-air movie nights, cool DJs, ping pong tables and quirky shops.
- Brew Bistro: Has a stylish, grown-up feel - perfect for after-work drinks or a chill Friday night. The happy hour (5pm-7pm) is worth catching, and they sometimes have live music. Famous for their craft beers, but they do all the regular drinks too.
- Geco: My new favourite place in Lavington! Geco has such a great vibe - think live music, and a mixed, easygoing crowd. I’ve been a couple of times and it was so much fun. Definitely go on a night when they have a band playing - there’s nothing like it! Usually have live music on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
- K1 Clubhouse: This is a cool restaurant/bar near to Westlands, in Parklands. Sundays are my favourite - there’s a fun flea market and live music. They also hold reggae nights on Thursdays. Such a unique spot!
- Bao Box: A board game/karaoke/restaurant in Westlands - fun for a low-key night out with friends. They’ve got loads of games (board games and more physical games, like mini golf and darts), karaoke, pop up events, good food, and a chilled vibe.
- Choices Pub: This one’s a little more local, less polished - but that’s part of the charm. Choices Pub is known for good music, a lively crowd, and well-priced drinks.
- Yunion: An all-day brunch café that transforms into a cool bar with dance nights. Love the vibe here-it’s trendy but not pretentious. Located in The Oval building in Westlands, it’s a nice mix of bar, café, and dance floor. Their Upperhill (Britam Towers) location also has free kizomba lessons on Thursdays.
- NSK: This is one of the coolest and most creative spaces in Nairobi. NSK is part food court, part rooftop bar, part art gallery, and part event space - all rolled into one! It’s got a funky, industrial feel with colourful murals and repurposed shipping containers - perfect for photos too! They host events, DJs, and themed nights, so keep an eye on their socials to see what’s on.
- Carnivore: This is the nightclub at the famous Carnivore restaurant. To be honest, I’m kind of over big clubs with shots and flashing lights - but that said, with the right group, it can still be a lot of fun.
- Sky Lounge: If you’re after a classy rooftop experience with sweeping views of Nairobi National Park on one side and the city skyline on the other, Sky Lounge is your spot. It’s at the top of Emara Ole-Sereni near Mombasa Road, so it’s a bit outside the main nightlife areas, but totally worth the trip - especially around sunset.
- Sarabi: Located at the Sankara Hotel in Westlands, Sarabi is an upscale rooftop bar with an infinity pool, lounge seating, and one of the best cocktail menus in town. It’s perfect for a glam night out or a relaxed drink with a view.
- Another Great Rooftop Option: It’s a rooftop indie cinema, café, bar, and creative space all in one - tucked away in Kilimani. They show a mix of local and international films, and afterwards you can hang out on the rooftop with a drink, soak in the view, and chat about the movie (or not).
- Sky Bar: Another great rooftop option in Westlands. Sky Bar sits on top of the Ibis Styles Hotel and has a laid-back, modern vibe with good food, decent cocktails, and panoramic views. It’s not overly crowded, so it’s a solid choice if you want somewhere with atmosphere but without the chaos.
Dance the Night Away: Nairobi has a brilliant dance scene! Check out Dance Factory Kenya for an up-to-date list of dance events - from salsa to kizomba and bachata to Afrobeat nights. It’s a great way to meet people and try something new.

Belly up to the bar and order one of several famous tipples that you’ll find across the city’s watering holes, from dawa (a refreshing drink made from sugar, vodka, lime, and honey) to Tusker beer. It’s hard to beat sitting on a rooftop, drink in hand, as the sun sets and Nairobi’s skyline begins to glitter under the cover of darkness.
NIGHTLIFE IN NAIROBI Kenya Is Not What You Think(DAMN!!!)
Local Bars: An Authentic Experience
It has become a tradition for most Kenyans to start and finish off their nights in their local bars. This is mostly because the local bars sell beers at an affordable ‘Mwananchi’ (local citizen) price. All you have to do is find it. And this is not difficult to do. Either ask your local guide, or friends to point out that one bar.
The thing about many of these local bars is that they offer everything that the big city clubs offer only at a cheaper rate. In Lang’ata for example (a popular mid-class suburb) you will find clubs such as that sell local and international beers at less than 200/= (a little over $2). This really depends on which part of the city you visit.

As fun as all these bars are, if you really want to get down and dirty with the locals, you should try the bars, any bar, in Nairobi West and the greater Eastlands Region. Some bars are so popular that they never closes!
Tips for Enjoying Local Bars
- When to Go: Due to recent Central Government regulations, bars are now licensed to operate from 5PM to 11PM on weekday and from 2PM to 11PM on weekends.
- How to Get Served: To get served in Kenyan bars you have to but sit down and a waiter will be right with you. Depending on how busy the local bar is, and most of them get super busy especially on the weekends, service is often very fast. By picking out a waiter or waitress you can flirt with and smile at will almost always guarantee you faster and better service.
- What to Drink: If you are the experimental type, you should try an assortment of the local beers. ‘Tusker’ in particular is very good and so is ‘Pilsner’. For the more sophisticated palate, you should try any beer from the Sierra brand. Sierra Blonde is great for the ladies and Amber for the guys. On the other hand, if you are not a beer drinker, then you can try our Mara wine, or Leleshwa Wine, these are all very good.
- What to Eat: When it comes to food, you can never go wrong with nyama choma and Ugali or fries (barbeque and French fries). For the best nyama choma in any local bar anywhere, go to Blue Bells in Hurlingham. The Nyama Choma chef here is simply heaven sent!! Often roasted, fried or boiled. ‘Chemsha’ is a local term for the best kind of boiled meat served in any local bar within the city.
All you need is a bunch of awesome friends, Cab fare and a taste for adventure. You will be tired to the bone, but it will be worth it. You do however have to be above the legal drinking age, which is 18 in Kenya and you cannot drink and drive.
