Nigeria Visa Lottery: Requirements and Application Guide

The Diversity Immigrant Visa Program (DV Program), also known as the DV Lottery and the Green Card Lottery, is a U.S. government program that makes 55,000 immigrant visas available each year to natives of countries with historically low immigration rates to the United States. Each year, the Department of State publishes detailed instructions for entering the DV Program. These visas are awarded randomly to people from countries with historically low immigration rates to the United States. There is some yearly variation in the eligible countries.

The US Department of State selects applications randomly from all qualified entries. For the most recent program, eligible countries include: Argentina, Egypt, Nepal, Ukraine, Thailand, Albania, Kenya and Uzbekistan. Department of State puts out a list of eligible and ineligible countries. The list of countries may change each year.

Still, Canada, China, India, Mexico, and the United Kingdom never make the list because these countries all send many immigrants to the United States.

Eligibility for the DV Lottery

Applicants must be from a country on the DV Lottery eligible countries list and must have either a high school education or two years of qualifying work experience.

  • Country of Birth: For “country of birth,” list the country you were born in, regardless of where you live. If the country has a different name now than it did when you were born, use its current name.
  • Country of Eligibility: For “country of eligibility,” list either your country of birth or-if you qualify to use your spouse’s or your parents’ birth countries-list that country. The country you currently live in is irrelevant to this question.

How to Apply For the Diversity Visa Lottery

Entering the green card lottery involves filling out a simple form online, which doesn’t cost anything. The US Department of State is expected to open the registration period for the Diversity Visa (DV) Program for Fiscal Year 2027 in early October 2025, with the application window likely closing in early November 2025. Diversity Visa Lottery entries for the federal fiscal year 2027 are expected to be accepted beginning in early October 2025, typically around 12:00 noon Eastern Daylight Time, and will close in early November 2025 at 12:00 noon Eastern Standard Time. You can enter the lottery every year from early October through early November.

Changes to the DV-2027 entry process could affect how and when applicants register, potentially impacting eligibility or access. Understanding the updated entry rules is critical for prospective applicants seeking one of the limited green cards available through a highly competitive program.

Steps to Apply:

  1. Check Eligibility: Make sure your country of birth is on the list of eligible countries. You’ll also need a high school education or equivalent work experience.
  2. Gather Information: You’ll need personal details like your name, date of birth, and passport information, as well as similar information for your spouse and children.
  3. Prepare a Photo: A recent passport-style photo is required for each applicant. Follow the same photo requirements as for a green card application.
  4. Submit Your Entry: Fill out the official online application form accurately and completely.

To see the most recent eligible countries, see the list beginning on page 30 of the 2026 DV Lottery instructions. Read the instructions for the registration process.

Important Considerations:

  • You must list your spouse, even if they don’t live with you and do not intend to immigrate.
  • You must list all of your biological and adopted children, no matter how old they are. You should also list all of your step-children under age 21, even if you are no longer married to their parents.

Important Information Regarding the Application Process

There is a limited time period when you can register for the Diversity Immigrant Visa (DV) Program during each fiscal year. No late entries or paper entries are accepted. The law allows only one entry by or for each person during each registration period. The Department of State uses advanced technology to detect multiple entries. If you submit more than one entry you will be disqualified.

If you submit incorrect or incomplete information, your entry may be disqualified. You cannot correct an entry after submission. However, both spouses may submit one entry each if both meet eligibility requirements. Please note that spouses can each file a Green card lottery application if they each meet the DV lottery eligibility requirements independently.

You will see a confirmation screen containing your name and a unique confirmation number after you submit a complete entry. Print this confirmation screen for your records. It is extremely important that you retain your confirmation number.

Selection and Notification

Diversity Visa lottery winners are chosen randomly by a computer program. A certain number of visas are allocated to each region of the world, and no one country receives more than 7% of the Diversity Visas available in any given year.

Although the exact dates vary, people who have entered the Diversity Visa lottery can check the status of their application beginning in early May of the year following their application by using the Entrant Status Check link on the Diversity Visa webpage. If you registered for the lottery, keep your confirmation number in a safe place. You will need that number to check the status of your entry online.

For example, if you apply for the 2026 green card lottery during the registration period (Oct-Nov 2024), the winners will be announced sometime in May 2025. You could only apply for your visa during the fiscal year 2026, from Oct. 1, 2025, through Sept. 30, 2026. The sooner you apply during that year, the sooner you will be scheduled for your visa interview and be issued your visa.

Once you have your visa, you must enter the United States on or before the expiration date printed on it. A Diversity Visa is typically valid for up to six months from the date it was issued.

You’ll get a numerical rank when you’re notified that you won the Diversity Visa, which will tell you when you can apply for your visa. Towards the end of July, you can check the State Department’s visa bulletin to see when you can submit your application.

What Happens Next If You’re Selected?

If you’re selected in the green card lottery, it’s essential to act fast, even though it could still be a year or more before you can come to the United States. There are two reasons to act immediately: First, your application must be processed, and your visa must be issued by the end of the fiscal year for which you were selected. Second, more people are selected for the Diversity Visa than visas available, and if you wait until the last minute, no visas might be left.

Once you see a visa available, you should submit form DS-260 to the National Visa Center. You will be approved for your immigrant visa at the interview if you meet all the requirements.

If You’re in the United States

If you’re in the United States in a temporary immigration status (technically known as “non-immigrant status”) when you win the Diversity Visa lottery, you’ll apply for a green card through United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) by filing Form I-485. You should submit your application as soon as a visa becomes available, based on the visa bulletin.

Avoiding Scams

Unfortunately, the Diversity Visa program is sometimes abused by scammers as a way to defraud hopeful immigrants. State Department wrote in a social media post: The Diversity Visa (DV) 2027 entry registration period is not open at this time. We are aware of reports of fraudulent claims that DV-2027 entry is open and of individuals and services falsely claiming they can increase your chances of selection. This is not true.

Here are a couple of tips to avoid common scams related to the Diversity Visa:

  • Entering the Diversity Visa lottery is free. There is no cost for foreign nationals to register for the Diversity Visa Lottery. There is no fee to submit a DV Lottery application, but if selected, applicants must pay the standard nonimmigrant visa and immigrant visa fees as part of the formal immigration process.
  • You are strongly encouraged to complete the entry form yourself without a “Visa Consultant,” “Visa Agent,” or other facilitator who offers to help.

A “winner” can save his/her employer significant time, money, and aggravation by avoiding the normal green card lottery process.

Visa Sponsorship Options

Getting a U.S. visa on your own can be challenging; however, having the right sponsorship can significantly ease the journey and improve your chances of approval. In simple terms, sponsorship means someone in the United States, whether an employer offering you a job, a school admitting you as a student, or a family member inviting you to join them-is officially standing behind your application.

  1. Family Sponsorship: U.S. citizens can file petitions for spouses, parents, children, and siblings, while green card holders can sponsor spouses and unmarried children. The process starts when your relative files Form I-130 (Petition for Alien Relative).
  2. Scholarships and Academic Exchanges: Winning a fully funded scholarship or academic exchange gives you an automatic visa sponsorship, usually an F-1 or J-1. These government-funded opportunities provide not just visas, but tuition, living costs, and research support. To qualify, prepare strong academic transcripts, recommendation letters, and personal statements.
  3. Employment: This is the most direct route for professionals. The most common visa under this route is the H-1B, meant for specialised occupations such as engineering, tech, healthcare, and finance.
  4. Education: Go to university, and after graduation, apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT). This allows you to work legally for 12 months, or up to 36 months if your field qualifies for a STEM extension.
  5. Intra-company Transfer: If you already work for a multinational company in Nigeria, this may be your simplest path. It avoids the H-1B lottery and provides a smoother transition since you’re moving within the same organisation.

Applicants currently possessing H or L visas need not worry about concurrently stating immigrant and nonimmigrant intent. Applicants currently possessing other types of visas should review this issue carefully before applying for the lottery.
