Sierra Leone might not be the first country that springs to mind when planning a vacation, but it's a hidden gem that offers a unique travel experience. After attending a meeting organized by a Sierra Leone-based resort in Nigeria, I became intrigued and decided to explore the country. Despite not having as many well-known tourist attractions as some destinations, Sierra Leone is a haven for nature-seeking and adventurous travelers alike. Myself and two other Nigerians explored Sierra Leone and it was really good to us. The clean beaches, wildlife, experiences, food, accommodation, everything was just so great! I can assure you that a visit to this country will be a memorable one.
Here are some essential tips to help you plan your trip from Nigeria to Sierra Leone:
Visa Requirements
The best news first: if you're traveling on a Nigerian passport, you don't need a visa to enter Sierra Leone! Sierra Leone is an ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) member country, which grants visa-free access to citizens of other member states. All you have to do is present your international passport upon arrival, and you're good to go.
Flights to Sierra Leone
There are several airlines that operate flights from Lagos to Freetown. Air Peace and African World Airlines are two options for this route. I flew with African World Airlines. Keep in mind that flights are typically not direct and usually involve a layover in Accra. The cost of a flight can range from N200,000 to N350,000, depending on when you book. Booking early is advisable to secure a more affordable rate.
My flight on African World Airlines was smooth, although the plane was relatively small, a 50-seater Embraer ERJ145. The total flight time to Sierra Leone is approximately 3 hours, excluding layovers. As the planes don’t have individual screens for passengers, bring your own entertainment such as music, books, or magazines for the flight.

Currency Information
The official currency of Sierra Leone is the Sierra Leonean Leone (SLL). During my visit, the exchange rate was around $1 = 8700 SLL in town, while the rate at the airport was slightly lower at 8400 SLL. It's recommended to exchange your money in town to get a better rate.

What to Wear
Sierra Leone has a relaxed attitude towards clothing. There are no strict dressing laws, so you can wear whatever you feel comfortable in. However, it's wise to consider the weather when choosing your outfits. During my visit, the weather was quite warm, around 29 degrees Celsius.
Things to Do in Sierra Leone
If you're seeking adventure, beautiful beaches, and diverse wildlife, Sierra Leone is the perfect destination. It caters to a wide range of travel interests. Although my trip was relatively short, the places I visited were truly captivating! In 4 days, we visited some places and did some fun activities:
- Village tour
- City tour
- Visited the chimpanzee sanctuary
- Explored many beaches
- Visited the National Museum
- Visited the National Railway Museum
The People of Sierra Leone
The people I encountered during my trip were incredibly friendly and welcoming. We had engaging conversations about Nigerian culture, similarities between our countries, and many other topics. I also had the honor of meeting two of the country’s Ministers during a welcome ceremony held for our group.
In summary, Sierra Leone offers a unique and enriching travel experience. With its visa-free entry for Nigerians, beautiful landscapes, and friendly locals, it's a destination worth considering for your next adventure.
