The southern oil-producing region of Rivers State has been a focal point of significant events, ranging from political confrontations to healthcare advancements and discussions on international relations.
Political Landscape and Governance
The crisis in the southern oil-producing region of Rivers State began after a political confrontation between incumbent Gov. Siminalayi Fubara and state lawmakers. Some lawmakers attempted to impeach Fubara, accusing him of illegally presenting the state budget and altering the composition of the legislature. Fubara has denied these accusations.

Healthcare and HIV Prevention
Project director of the Rivers ASPIRE Project at IHVN, Dr. Stanley Idakwo, stated that while maternal and infant antiretroviral prophylaxis has helped reduce HIV transmission rates, uptake of follow-up services such as facility-based deliveries and ARV use during labour remains relatively low.
He highlighted the agency’s collaboration with the Rivers State Ministry of Health to decentralise PMTCT services. “Through PEPFAR-CDC and Global Fund support, we have engaged over 400 traditional birth attendants across 319 wards under a hub-and-spoke model linked to 115 facilities. “Our goal is to ensure that no child in Rivers State is born with HIV.

“This level of acceptance is largely due to effective counselling, peer support and the mentor mother model which helps women feel supported throughout their pregnancy and treatment journey. Despite the progress, Idakwo noted that barriers to access remain.
He added that these issues are being addressed through task-sharing among health workers, stronger case management and the integration of PMTCT with broader maternal health services.
“This is undoubtedly a welcome development for me and a remarkable achievement for us.

“We must learn from history,” he cautioned. “Africa has suffered from interventions that promised peace but left nations divided. “Foreign support can only complement what we build from within,” he reiterated.
