In today’s rapidly evolving world, access to quality education is not just a luxury but a fundamental right. Sadly, many children in Nigeria are unable to attend school due to various challenges. However, there is a transformative initiative that holds the key to unlocking boundless educational opportunities for every child. Introducing the Nigerian Learning Passport - an innovative platform that is set to revolutionize education and empower learners of all ages.
Nigeria Learning Passport (NLP), is a recent initiative aimed at strengthening basic educational provision in the country. Nigeria's Federal Ministry of Education recently established a distance learning platform with online, mobile and offline capability that enables students to continue learning and gain skills beyond the classroom. This learning initiative would complement the face-to-face conventional teaching mode.

The Impact of NLP on Education
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Nigeria had been making steady progress in providing access to schooling and improving the quality of education. Beginning in May 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic shuttered schools in Nigeria on a greater scale and with a more severe impact on learning than ever before. To mitigate the effects of the school closures and enable this progress to continue, GPE initially provided Nigeria with US$140,000 through a global grant to UNICEF.
The grant supported the Ministry of Education in the development of Nigeria’s COVID-19 education response called the “opening better” school initiative. The government’s plan involved providing alternative and remote learning opportunities using radio and television platforms. GPE’s subsequent support of US$15 million COVID-19 accelerated funding enabled children to continue learning through access to diverse remote learning programs. These included radio, television, online platforms, community learning and take-home learning materials that were appropriate for each context to meet the needs of each child including the most vulnerable. Schools re-opened on October 12, 2020, after closing for over 90 days.
Nigeria harnessed its progress on its remote platform to develop the national learning management system, the Nigeria Learning Passport (NLP). The platform, first deployed in Timor Leste, was taken up by multiple countries during the pandemic to enable learning continuity during school closures. The Learning Passport continues to be the platform of choice for over 30 countries around the world, including Brazil, Mexico, Sudan, Zimbabwe, and now Nigeria, as they aim to recover from the pandemic, develop quality, inclusive digital learning ecosystems and reimagine education to be more resilient during future crises. Students can access a variety of content via a mobile app or web browser.
Benefits of the Nigeria Learning Passport
The initiative provides and awakens government responsibility (Ministry of Education) to re-enact e-learning platform, with detailed core-curriculum contents across basic education subjects, which was arranged in a logical order.
- Supplemental Learning: For students who are already enrolled in formal education, the Nigerian Learning Passport serves as a powerful tool for supplemental learning. It provides a rich repository of interactive and high-quality content that complements classroom instruction, helping students grasp core concepts more effectively.
- Empowering Out-of-School Children: One of the greatest challenges in Nigeria is the number of out-of-school children. The Nigerian Learning Passport has the potential to turn this crisis into an opportunity. By embracing this initiative, out-of-school children can gain access to an entire world of knowledge and education. Through engaging content and offline functionality, the platform empowers them to acquire essential skills, equipping them for a brighter future.
- Collaboration and Engagement: Education stakeholders play a crucial role in shaping the future of education. The Nigerian Learning Passport encourages collaboration among stakeholders by providing a unified platform where educators, policymakers, and community leaders can share resources, exchange ideas, and contribute to educational development.
- Bridging the Digital Divide: The Nigerian Learning Passport addresses the digital divide by providing offline functionality, ensuring that even those in remote areas with limited internet connectivity can benefit from quality education.
