Mohammed Badaru Abubakar: Profile of Nigeria's Minister of Defence

Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, born on 19 September 1962, is a prominent Nigerian politician currently serving as the Nigerian Minister of Defence since 21 August 2023. He is also the National President of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture.

Background and Education

Abubakar is a graduate of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he obtained a B.Sc. degree in Accounting.

Political Career

Popularly known as Badaru, he has held significant positions in various committees, including:

  • Chairman of the Nigerian Presidential Committee on Fertilizer Distribution to Farmers
  • Chairman of a Presidential Committee on Non-Oil Revenue

He was also a gubernatorial candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria.

In recognition of his hard work and philanthropic activities, Badaru was conferred with the traditional titles of Sardaunan Ringim in Ringim emirate and Walin Jahun in Dutse emirate councils respectively.

Role in Defence

As the Minister of Defence, Badaru works closely with the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). The chief of defence staff gives operational directives to the Nigerian Armed Forces through the service chiefs and reports to the commander-in-chief with administrative supervision of the minister of defence.

The CDS is the head of the Nigerian Armed Forces and the most senior uniformed military adviser to the minister of defence and the president of Nigeria. It is occupied by the most senior commissioned officer appointed by the president of Nigeria.
