With a greater connection worldwide, the need for effective, progressive diplomatic relations between countries is of the utmost importance. Ambassadors act as the diplomatic representatives of their country abroad. In the United States, ambassadors are appointed to represent the office of the President in foreign nations.

The Embassy of Nigeria in Washington, D.C., plays a crucial role in fostering these relations. The architects, led by Robert Sponseller of Shalom Baranes Associates, designed the building to represent life in a Nigerian village. Work had begun on a new chancery in the late 1980s, but political instability in Nigeria delayed serious work for nearly a decade. Approved by the National Capital Planning Commission on March 4, 1999, construction was completed in early 2002.

The responsibilities of an ambassador are diverse and require a wide range of skills. With such a wide range of skills required to become an ambassador, it can be challenging to understand how to stand out.

1. Strengthening Diplomatic Relations

Nigeria and the United States share a robust and growing relationship that reflects a deepening partnership in trade, investment, and strategic collaboration. The Ambassador plays a crucial role in nurturing and expanding these ties:

Promoting Bilateral Dialogue: Facilitating communication and cooperation between the governments of Nigeria and the USA on various issues of mutual interest.
Representing Nigeria: Acting as the official representative of Nigeria in the United States, conveying the country's policies and perspectives.
Strategic Collaboration: Collaborating on various strategic initiatives, including security cooperation, counterterrorism efforts, and regional stability.

2. Promoting Economic and Trade Relations

Economic relations between Nigeria and the US have a long history, expanding into all areas of commercial activities. Nigeria is Africa’s largest economy and a leading black and African nation on global affairs. At present, Nigeria is the second largest trading partner of the US in sub-Saharan Africa. The US is also Nigeria’s biggest export market and enjoys preferential trading relations under the Africa Growth and Opportunity Agreement (AGOA).

Attracting Investment: Highlighting Nigeria's potential as an investment destination and working to attract American businesses. Nigeria offers US companies the best market in Africa. Also, because of its very modern and open market economic system, the business environment offers American businesses the best market to put their money in Africa. The Nigerian government has continued to work assiduously to improve the enabling environment in which business is done in the country.
Facilitating Trade: Promoting trade between the two countries, identifying opportunities for Nigerian businesses to export to the US.
Supporting US Companies: Many US companies have been significant investors in Nigeria, particularly in sectors such as oil and gas, telecommunications, and manufacturing. companies, including ExxonMobil, Chevron, and General Electric, have substantial operations in Nigeria, contributing to job creation and economic development.

3. Fostering Cultural and Educational Exchange

The Ambassador also promotes educational and cultural ties. The US and Nigeria have strong educational and cultural ties, with numerous exchange programs and collaborations between Nigerian and American institutions. This involves:

Nigeria’s culture, for instance has attained growing influence globally. Nigeria has always been politically and culturally influential on the African continent undoubtably, as a result of its large population and rich culture. Nigeria’s culture, which is deeply rooted in Art, fashion, film, music, food and literature, translates into remarkable international prestige.
Educational Initiatives: Supporting exchange programs and collaborations between Nigerian and American universities and research institutions.
Diaspora Engagement: Engaging with the Nigerian diaspora in the US, recognizing their contributions to both countries.

4. Consular Services and Citizen Welfare

Dr. Emenike: A Profile in Leadership

H.E Dr. Emenike joined the Nigerian Foreign Service in January 1987. She served variously in the Protocol, Africa, and Training departments of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. For six years, between 1992 and 1998, she was posted to the Nigerian Embassy in Abidjan, Cote D’Ivoire. In 2002, Dr.

Ambassador Emenike has two Bachelor’s degrees, three Master’s Degrees, and a Doctorate Degree. She earned a B.Sc. Sociology and Anthropology from the University of Maiduguri, Nigeria, and an LL.B from the University of Reading in the U.K. She also holds a postgraduate diploma in Diplomacy from the Nigerian Foreign Service Academy as well as a Master’s degree in International Law and Diplomacy from the University of Lagos, Nigeria. Dr. Emenike subsequently earned another Master’s in International Management from the University of Reading in the U.K. Her major areas of interest remain Africa and her people.

The Consulate General in Atlanta

The Consulate is, among other things, focused on strengthening relations between Nigeria and the USA, protecting Nigerians and interests of Nigeria in the USA, promoting investment and trade, and developing economic, cultural and scientific relations between the United States and Nigeria. Traditionally, the work of the Consulate General is concentrated in two areas. First is to cater for the welfare and interest of Nigerian citizens who live in Atlanta and other southern eastern states under the jurisdiction of the Consulate. These include Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and West Virginia.

On the Economic front, Atlanta boasts of great institutions such as the World Chamber of Commerce, World Trade Center, the New Black Wall Street Market and other major economic power houses such as Delta Air Lines, Coca-Cola, UPS, Home Depot as well as a number of other globally rated businesses. This has made it possible for me to engage all these various institutions and many more to strengthen and expand relations with Nigeria, and so far, very good results have been recorded. There is greater awareness of the business opportunities available in Nigeria for American businesses. Atlanta is a great center of culture, civilization, knowledge and enterprise and therefore, it has been my major drive to work with partners to open greater opportunities for collaboration.
