Mubende, Uganda: A Comprehensive Overview

Mubende is a town in the Central Region of Uganda and the site of the district headquarters. It is a commercial spot. Mubende is a district in the Central Region of Uganda and is a part of Mubende District.

Location and Geography

Mubende District is bordered by Kyankwanzi District to the north, Kiboga District and Kassanda to the northeast and Mityana District to the east. The district covers an area of approximately 4,620 square kilometres (1,780 sq mi). The geographical coordinates of Mubende are 0.558 deg latitude, 31.395 deg longitude, and 4,311 ft elevation.

Population

The 2002 national census estimated the population of Mubende to be 16,000. In 2010, the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) estimated the population at 21,400. In 2014, the national population census put the population of the town at 103,473. In 2020 UBOS estimated the mid-population of Mubende Town at 121,600 people.

The 1991 population census estimated the district population at about 277,500. In 2002 the national census estimated the population of the district to be about 423,450 people of whom (50.3%) were males and (49.7%) were female, with an annual population growth rate of 3.6%.

  • Nakayima Shrine: This shrine is said to hold the spirit of Ndahura, a former Bacwezi king. The site, located about 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) outside of the town's central business district, is marked by the Nakayima tree. The shrine is located on top of Mubende Hill, rising 213 metres (699 ft) above the surrounding terrain to a peak of 1,533 metres (5,030 ft) above sea level.
  • Magonga Shrine: The shrines may be found at Nnono Village, Maganga Parish, Malangala Sub-County, which is 120 kilometers away from Mubende. It is thought that Kintu, the first King of the Ganda tribe, was interred in the shrine. The site comprises a tile-roofed house where Kintu’s grave is found and other graves.
  • Lake Wamala: Lake Wamala is said to have been born. For the Buganda people of Central Uganda, the lake has significant traditional and cultural value. The districts of Mubende, Mityana, and Gomba in the Ugandan Buganda Region all share the lake. Numerous islands, including Lwanju Island, Mabo Island, Bagwe Island, Kiraza, and Kazinga, among others, are scattered throughout.
  • Tanda Pits: Tanda Pits are located 8 kilometers to Mityana town, 92 kilometers from Mubende, and 3 kilometers off the Kampala-Mubende highway. The pits whose bottom cannot be seen with naked eyes currently number about 266.
  • Mubende Forest Reserve: The Mubende-Kyenjojo road runs through a natural tropical forest reserve that is more than 50 kilometers long. Primates and many different species of birds are among the forest’s wildlife.

Economy and Infrastructure

The major economic activity in Mubende district is Agriculture with emphasis on food crops like Sweet potatoes, Beans, Cassava, Maize, Bananas, ground nuts etc. Cash crops include coffee and tea. It has a total of 439 primary schools with 299 government, 93 private and 47 community schools. It has 27 Government dispensaries (II), 11 Government health centres(III), 14 private dispensaries, 42 clinics.

Health and Research

Several studies have been conducted in Mubende District to address various health issues:

  • Bovine Tuberculosis: A study conducted in Mubende district municipal abattoir found that 9.7% of 1,576 carcasses inspected had bovine TB-like lesions.
  • Mycobacterium Bovis in Pigs: A study documented the occurrence of M. bovis in slaughter pigs in Mubende district, Uganda.
  • Integration of Health Services: A study documented challenges encountered in providing integrated sexual and reproductive health (SRH), HIV/AIDS and maternal health (MH) services in Mubende.
  • Malaria: Six districts (Arua, Apac, Lira, Kamuli, Iganga, and Mubende) could have the largest benefit because they account for about 28% of the remote population affected by falciparum malaria with access to the 2G mobil.
  • Tuberculosis Diagnosis: At the Mubende hospital, Dr.Belard and Dr. DeStigter set up pediatric scanning clinics for diagnosing Tuberculosis (TB) using ultrasound.

Additional Points

Mubende was part of Buganda Kingdom at Independence in 1967. It borders the districts of Kiboga and Luwero in the North and north East separately, Kibale in the north-West, Kyenjojo in the West and Sembabule and Mpigi in the South.

The town is situated about 100 miles west of the capital city of the country, Kampala, approximately on the halfway from Kampala to Fort Portal. Mubende is a home to almost 50,000 people, most of those are involved in trade and commerce, as well as in farming and agriculture.
