Mount Afadjato: Ghana's Highest Peak

Mount Afadjato, also spelled as Mount Afadzato, is a prominent tourist destination and the highest peak in Ghana. The magnificent mountain is in the Volta Region of Ghana, near the border with Togo, West Africa. The hill is approximately 15 kilometers northeast of the regional capital, Ho. Mount Afadjato and its neighboring peak, Mount Aduadu, form the Agumatsa Range.

Mount Afadja, known as Afadjato to the Ewe people of Ghana and Togo, is one of the highest mountains in Ghana. The summit is located in the Volta Region, near the border with Togo, close to the villages of Liati Wote and Gbledi Gbogame in the Afadjato South District and Hohoe Municipality, respectively. It is about 178 kilometers (111 mi) northeast of Accra, and 178 kilometers (111 mi) northwest of Lomé.

The mountain's name is "Afadja," while the suffix "-to" in the Ewe language means mountain. 'Afadja' is the name of the mountain whereas 'to' in the Ewe language means mountain therefore it is called 'Afadjato' by the indigenes. The correct name would be 'Mount Afadja' as 'Mount Afadjato' will be a repetition of the 'Mountain.'

Mt. “Afadjato” means “at war with the bush” in the Ewe language, which speaks to its rugged terrain. The name of the mountain is derived from the Ewe word ‘Avadzeto’ which means at war with the bush. According to legend, the Ewe people were beset by wild animal attacks when they first migrated to the area. In response, they fought back, overwhelming the animals and pursuing them as they retreated. In the Ewe language, “afar” means “war”, “dja” means “plant”, and “to” means “mountain”.

Akwapim-Togo Ranges

Akwapim-Togo Ranges, narrow belt of ridges and hills in Ghana, western Africa. They extend in a southwest-northeast line for about 200 miles (320 km) from the Densu River mouth (near Accra) on the Atlantic coast to the boundary with Togo. Averaging 1,500 feet (460 meters) in height, the hills continue eastward to the Niger River as the Togo Mountains in Togo and as the Atakora Mountains in Benin, and they contain isolated peaks near the Togo border.

The Volta River cuts through their complex of closely packed folds at Ajena (Volta) Gorge and is harnessed by the great dam at Akosombo 1 mile (1.6 km) downstream. Although the area is fertile and supports semideciduous forest, the ranges’ descent to the surrounding plains is frequently steep and marked by abrupt cliffs. The central highlands, once important for palm oil and cocoa, have suffered greatly from erosion. The section within the Volta River region is important for cash crops of cacao and coffee. Plantains, cassava, and corn (maize) also are grown.

Because of an equable climate, the ranges contain hill resorts such as Aburi, located some 20 miles (32 km) north of Accra, and Amedzofe. Roads are sparse and are mainly limited to the south. The northern and western fringes benefit somewhat from boat traffic on the Volta reservoir.

Amedzofe and Mount Gemi

The former German mission Amedzofe is situated in the Avatime Hills with around 40 km distance of Ho. Mount Gemi one of the highest mountains in the country can easily be climbed and offers amazing views over the width as far as Lake Volta. The Germans came to Amedzofe in 1842.

The Germans settled at various places in the Trans Volta Togoland, with Keta, Kpandu and Amedzofe being of few of such notable places. However, Amedzofe was considered to be the headquarters of the Germans and there is probably a good reason for that. With the town being 650 meters above sea level, it could be said to be one of the few towns in the then Gold Coast that the Germans could consider as “home away from home” because of the cool climate. What’s more? This accounts for the rather cool and often hazy atmosphere around the mountain, an ideal place to escape from the rather high temperatures of mainland Gold Coast.

Tales have it that it took the Germans about 40 years to really settle in at Amedzofe. Most of their houses were completed in 1888, along with the missionary School that they built. After 50 long years of settlement at Amedzofe and engaging in other activities such as the establishment of schools, Church (Evangelical Presbyterian Church), the Germans decided to commemorate that event in 1939 by mounting a cross on the hill locally known as “Gayito”. The German life and activities in the area were championed by German Evangelical Missions Institute (GEMI).

Snake Village at Liati Soba

One of the almost forgotten and neglected tourist sites of the district is the snake village at Liati Soba which in the past provided home for more than 15 types of snakes including a 1.7-meter long python that escaped in 2015 due to the poor conditions at the village. There are many different snakes in Ghana. The most common is python, cobra and African adders. The most venomous is the Black Mamba. The African Python is noted for its therapeutic values and so most visitors prefer to coil it around their neck to reduce body temperature and also to cure hypertensive diseases.

In Ewe religion snake is associated with Da, a spiritual force or “god” symbolized by the royal python snake. Snake is also associated with the Mami Water is a goddess or god of the sea. Snakes can be wrapped around her and she often is wearing certain jewelry (silver, coral beads, blue beads).
