The United States and Morocco share a long and rich history of diplomatic relations. Morocco was the first country to recognize the United States of America in 1777.
Regular diplomatic relations were established in 1905. In 1912 Morocco came under the control of France and Spain as protectorates. The United States did not initially recognize the French and Spanish protectorates over Morocco. Later, the U.S. government recognized the protectorates, and the Minister at Tangier was downgraded to the status of Diplomatic Agent. After recognizing Morocco’s independence, the U.S. established an embassy in Rabat and appointed a ranking ambassador, Cavendish W.

The current ambassador is Duke Buchan, who assumed the role TBD[1].
Duke Buchan, born in 1963, is known for his extensive work in both finance and diplomacy. After finishing his studies, Buchan built a successful career in global finance. He began his career at Merrill Lynch, where he gained expertise in global corporate finance and investment banking. In 2001, he founded Hunter Global Investors, which grew to manage billions of dollars. He later transitioned from finance to diplomacy and served as the US Ambassador to Spain and Andorra from 2017 to 2021. In that role, he focused on boosting trade, resolving tax issues, and promoting cultural exchanges between the US and European countries.

The ambassador is nominated by the President of the United States and appointed with Senate advice and consent. The inaugural holder of the position was Samuel R.

The Embassy of Morocco in Washington, D.C., serves as the Kingdom of Morocco's diplomatic mission to the United States. The former chancery, built in 1889 in the Romanesque Revival style, is a contributing property to the Dupont Circle Historic District. Previous occupants include attorney George William McLanahan, Representative Jacob Sloat Fassett, Assistant Secretary of the Navy Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., and Senator Dwight Morrow, among others.
“Morocco recognized the United States in 1777. King Mohammed VI described Trump’s recognition as a “historic decision” and a “milestone” in Morocco-US relations. After Trump’s re-election in late 2024, King Mohammed VI congratulated him and highlighted the importance of their bilateral relations. With Trump returning to office, his administration is expected to further reaffirm its recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara and potentially open a US consulate in the region and promote US investment in the southern provinces.
But the Biden years saw a slight dip in American commitment to upholding Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara.
