Moroccan Oil Alternatives: Exploring Affordable and Effective Hair Care

Moroccan Oil has become a household name in hair care, renowned for its use of argan oil. But with its premium price tag, many are seeking effective and more affordable alternatives. Let's delve into the world of argan oil and explore some popular options that promise similar benefits without breaking the bank.

The Rise of Argan Oil

Argan oil originates from Morocco and is produced from the kernels of the Argan tree. Women from North Africa and the Middle East have been using it for centuries, not just for hair but for skin and nails too due to its great moisturising properties. In Morocco, the Argan Tree is called "green gold". Beneath its lush green leaves lives the golden rich oil prized for its therapeutic value.

In the last couple of years, the west has been going crazy for this miracle oil, and since the brand ‘Moroccan Oil’ launched, it has been the number one best selling hair treatment in the UK and America. MoroccanOil's Oil Treatment was the first product of it's kind. It introduced Argan Oil to the world as a leading hair conditioning product.

Moroccan Argan Oil is cold pressed from the nut of the Argan tree (Argania spinosa). Moroccan Argan oil, rich in omega-6, antioxidants and vitamin E, penetrates into the hair to create a barrier against the damaging effects of heat, sun and wind to bring back a healthy and natural shine.

Personal Experiences and Product Comparisons

One user shared their experience testing Moroccan Oil and a couple of alternatives: Organix Moroccan Oil and an Avon hair product. Here’s a breakdown of their findings:

Moroccan Oil

The user purchased a sample size to test its worth. They tested this product in 2 different ways over 2 weeks, as an overnight treatment before washing, and as a leave in oil before blow drying. Their initial reaction to Moroccan Oil was that they really didn’t like the smell which was quite disappointing, its quite strong and they think its rather masculine, but of course this is a matter of opinion and some people really love it.

The first night the user had the product, they saturated the ends of their hair in it, wrapped it up in a warm turby-towel and went to sleep. In the morning they were pleased to see their hair had really soaked the oil up and was almost dry. In all honesty they weren’t blown away, their hair did feel soft, and my split ends did look sealed so it did its job, but they find I get the same results from L’oreals Extraordinary Oil, which is a third of the price. Credit where credit’s due though their hair did stay soft and shiny all day despite it being rained on and it combed through very easily at the end of the day.

Organix Moroccan Oil

The user was really excited to try this product and the first thing they thought was how much nicer the smell was, much more subtle and floral, they're a sucker for things that smell nice and it can really impact how they feel about a product. The morning after they used it as an overnight treatment, they saw it hadn’t soaked in quite as well as the more expensive one, their hair was still very damp. But when they rinsed it out it felt like silk, so maybe their hair just didn’t need as much moisture that night. Before blow drying, the user actually found this product much easier to distribute evenly through their hair, and realised the runny texture was actually quite a good thing.

Avon Hair Product

The user was very unimpressed. They tested it in the same way as the other 2, and found it didn’t soak into their hair overnight, left their hair greasy after blow drying, and smelt terrible. They’ve never used Avon hair products before and it has definitely put them off. They don’t like to do negative reviews.

Overall

In terms of value for money and results seen, the user would say Organix Moroccan Oil is by far the best of the 3. However their hair is already healthy and in good shape so there isn’t a huge amount for the oil to do, so they may not be able to see the results as well as people with very dry, damaged hair.

Ingredients to Look For

When choosing an argan oil product, pay attention to the ingredient list. A simple formulation might look like this:

Ingredients: Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone, Argan Oil, Grapeseed Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E) Glycereth-2 Cocoate/Benzoic Acid (Natural Preservative), Fragrance.

Additional Tips

  • Salon Tip: Add a few drops to your haircolor, bleach, or perm mixture for added shine and condition.
  • Deep Repair Masque: Deep Repair Masque is a revitalizing hair reconstructor for dry, damaged hair.
