Application Instructions

Before committing to a full head of color, we recommend conducting a strand test first to assess the level of color deposition. Start by choosing a small piece of hair to test, ideally one that’s mostly hidden when your hair is styled normally. Section off the strand and tie the rest out of the way. Apply Color Depositing Mask on the strand and leave on 2-3 minutes. Rinse. If the color is too subtle, try a second strand and leave on for longer. For more details, visit the blog.

Here’s how to use the mask effectively:

  1. Start with clean, towel-dried hair.
  2. Section hair and apply a generous amount of product.
  3. Distribute evenly using a wide-tooth comb.
  4. Leave on for 5-7 minutes, depending on desired intensity.
  5. Rinse thoroughly. Style as usual.

Note: Color Depositing Masks add temporary color that is designed to fade out gradually over time. The lighter the hair, the more vibrant and long-lasting the shade. Color results and longevity also depend on hair porosity.

Detailed Review of Cocoa and Bordeaux Shades

I am technically not one to have my hair coloured. I love my natural brown hair (in certain lighting it appears lighter than usual). But just because I like to keep it natural, doesn’t mean I don’t like the idea of playing around with hair colour whether as hair extensions or in photoshop.

Bordeaux is truly a crimson brown shade. The product has a pretty runny consistency and has the signature Moroccanoil scent. Because of the colour, I highly suggest to not wear light colour clothing and to be extra careful during application, as it will stain. When it comes to rinsing, it took a while to rinse off. The end results for Bordeaux is a bit of a disappointment for my dark brown hair. In natural lighting, there is a subtle difference but barely. When I used flash photography, however, there is a clearly visible dark red hue.

Cocoa is a chocolate brown shade. The product is quite thick compared to Bordeaux. I’m not sure if it’s the colour or because of the packaging. It also has the signature Moroccanoil scent. Application wise, it won’t stain as scary as Bordeaux but still be extra careful - wear dark colour clothing and wear gloves if you don’t want the product to temporarily stain your nails. Similar results to Bordeaux, I was disappointed with Cocoa. It’s hard to notice a difference but it did enhance my natural hair colour ever so slightly and left my hair looking and feeling smooth and silky. And again, with flash photography, there’s a noticeable colour difference.

Overall, if you’re looking for actual colour in your hair and have anything darker than medium brown hair, I would not quite suggest these colour hair masks, mainly because the results aren’t going to be as visible in natural lighting. If you simply want to enhance your natural dark hair colour, this is not a bad way to do so. To those who have lighter hair colour, go ahead, experiment and have fun! P.S., I have medium-to-long length hair and the 30ml pouch is enough as one use for my entire head. So if you’re simply experimenting with different colours or just wanting a one-time-try go for the 30ml pouch.

User Experiences and Reviews

Many users have shared their experiences with the Moroccanoil Color Depositing Mask. Here are a few highlights:

  • One user with long, strong hair found the Cocoa mask to be incredibly hydrating, combating brassiness and dryness. They noted their hair was "flat out gorgeous and shiny and soft" after use.
  • Another user with bleached blonde hair noted that while it's a decent hydrating mask, it didn't deposit much color in the Rose Gold shade.
  • A user with brown hair used Bordeaux and Mocha to refresh color between salon treatments, seeing "a dramatic difference with vivid and evenly distributed color."
  • For those with red and copper hair, the mask was praised for maintaining copper hues and moisturizing curls, with one user repurchasing it multiple times.
  • One user with dark brown hair experienced a nice red tint after using the mask, particularly noticeable in sunlight.
  • However, some users with darker hair noted that the color change was minimal and hardly noticeable in natural lighting.
  • Conversely, a user whose mother has silvery white hair found that it left the hair with a softer texture and more body, making it look thicker.

Here's a summary of user feedback:

Bleached Blonde Hair Neutral Minimal Color Deposit Decent
Brown Hair Positive Vivid, Evenly Distributed N/A
