Miss Universe Ghana: History and Winners

Miss Universe Ghana, with the slogan "Ghana's Next Sweetheart," is a national pageant that selects representatives for the Miss Universe pageant. This pageant is distinct from the Miss Ghana or Miss Earth Ghana pageants.

Ghana has participated in the Miss Universe pageant since 1991. Ghana has competed in Miss Universe 23 times, making its first appearance in 1991, only missing nine contests. It has two Miss Universe Placements. The representatives from Ghana for Miss Universe 1991, 1993, 1996 and 1998 were winners of the Miss Ghana pageant.

History of the Pageant

The Miss Universe Ghana launched for the first time in 1999. The pageant independently built to select the Ghanaian representative at Miss Universe pageant.

In 1999, R. Ayite Okyne took over the event directing and show production and eventually joined Juliette Korsah as National Director for the Miss Universe Ghana pageant. They relinquished the franchise in 2012 and are no longer involved in its operations.

In July 2019, Donkor announced that the Miss Universe Ghana organization is suspended while the restructuring of the organization continues. Therefore, Ghana will withdraw from the Miss Universe 2019.

Competition Format

The Miss Universe Ghana competition traditionally holds region representation every year. The 16 region representatives will compete for the crown. In the finale result there will be Second Runner-up, First Runner-up, then finally Miss Universe Ghana winner.

Miss Universe Ghana has four phases of competition that include: private interview, on-stage question, swimsuit and evening gown.

In order to compete for Miss Universe Ghana, you must live in Ghana and be between the ages of 18 - 28. Additionally, to qualify you must be a female who has never married and who does not have any children. Both.

Notable Achievements

The highest placement of Ghana is when Miss Universe Ghana 1999 Akuba Cudjoe placed as the Top 10 Finalist at the Miss Universe 1999.

The current Miss Universe Ghana is Engracia Mofuman.

Miss Universe Ghana 1999 Akuba Cudjoe was a Top 10 Finalist at the Miss Universe 1999 event in Trinidad and Tobago, where Mpule Kwelagobe of Botswana won the Miss Universe 1999 crown.

Miss Universe Ghana 2011, Erica Nego previously competed at the Miss USA pageant in 2009 representing Minnesota.

Miss Universe Ghana is the official preliminary to the Miss Universe pageant. The winner of Miss Universe Ghana represents Ghana at Miss Universe for a chance to win the title of Miss Universe.
