Historical Background
The city of Madina has a rich history that dates back to the pre-colonial era. Originally, the area was inhabited by the Ga people, one of the indigenous ethnic groups in Ghana. The Ga people have a long-standing presence in the Greater Accra Region, and their cultural heritage is deeply intertwined with the history of Madina.
During the colonial period, Ghana, then known as the Gold Coast, was under British rule. The British colonization had a significant impact on the political environment and development of Madina. Madina is one of the Zongos established in Accra. It was founded in 1959 by a Muslim, Alhaji Seido Karbo, who became Madina's first headman in 1964. They relocated from La Land at Shiashi to a neighbourhood near Nkwantanang. Madina was later given to this area.
The La people had previously made strenuous efforts to change the new name, but to no avail. This began in the 1960s, when the La people insisted on keeping the town's name, La Nkwantanang, because the land had traditionally belonged to them. Later, Indigenous Ga in Labadi demanded that the name be changed to La Hee, which means "New La." Both the names preferred by the La people and chosen by Alhaji Seido were later incorporated into the district's name, La Nkwantanang Madina Municipal District.
Named after the holy city in Saudi Arabia where the Prophet Muhammad's tomb is located, "Madina" is an Arabic word that means "city."
Demographics and Geography
The population of Madina has grown steadily over the years. The Ga sub-group of the Ga-Dangme people is the historical population of Accra. They form the largest ethnic sub-group in the Greater Accra Region, with 18.9% of the population. The Ga peoples were organized into six independent towns (Accra (Ga Mashie), Osu, La, Teshie, Nungua, and Tema).
The largest portion of the population of Accra is Akan, at 39.8% of the population. The next largest group is Ga-Dangme at 30.7% of the population. After this 18% of the population is Ewe.

The Ga people celebrate the Homowo festival, which literally means "hooting at hunger." This festival originated several centuries ago. It is celebrated in remembrance of a great famine that hit the Ga people in the sixteenth century. It is mainly a food festival which celebrates the passing of that terrible period in Ga history.
The Adangbe people from Ada celebrate the Asafotu festival, which is also called 'Asafotufiam', an annual warrior's festival celebrated by Ada people from the last Thursday of July to the first weekend of August commemorates the victories of the warriors in battle and is a memorial for those who fell on the battlefield.
Economy and Infrastructure
Throughout its history, Madina has experienced periods of economic growth and development. The city is known for its bustling markets, including the Madina Market and the Madina Zongo Junction Market, where various goods and commodities are traded.
Madina's main market is the Madina Market. It is the town's first choice for foodstuffs, clothing, shoes, cosmetics, electronics, building materials, and so much more. As a result, it is not surprising to find a crowded market, whether on weekdays or weekends. This area is usually congested due in part to the difficulty of finding a parking space. If you are arriving in a private vehicle, keep in mind that the car park is usually insufficient to accommodate the vehicles around you. Madina Market has a public bus station, which makes it simple to get direct buses to many areas.
Despite the high volume of human and vehicular traffic in this market, regular shoppers are not discouraged because the prices of goods are low.
The new market in Ogbojo is smaller than the one in Madina. It is less crowded, and the market stalls are well-organised, making for a pleasant shopping experience. Food and personal items can be purchased at reasonable prices here. For bulk purchases, however, it is preferable to visit a large market.
In recent years, the government of Ghana has invested in the development of Madina, focusing on improving infrastructure, education, healthcare, and other essential services.
The Greater Accra Region is served by the Kotoka International Airport in Accra. Four National highways - N1, N2, N4 and N6 - and one Regional highway - R40 - pass through the Greater Accra region.
Education
Education in Madina can be categorised into Government, religious and private. Some tertiary and second cycle schools located within the municipality includes and not limited to University of Professional Studies formerly known as the Institute of professional Studies, Islamic University College Ghana established with the aim of providing quality tertiary education to the youths, especially Muslim and the less-privileged or marginalised communities in Ghana, Wisconsin International University.
The University of Ghana is only about 20 minutes away from the town. The University of Professional Studies is located in the town.
Healthy-Mind International is one of Madina's top primary schools. Their methods of instruction are concept-driven, inquiry-led, and research-based. Political Administration
The political administration of the region is through the local government system. Under this administration system, the region is divided into 29 MMDA's (made up of 2 Metropolitan, 23 Municipal and 4 Ordinary Assemblies).
Each District, Municipal or Metropolitan Area and it's corresponding constituency, is administered by a Chief Executive and a Member of Parliament, representing the central government but deriving authority from an Assembly headed by a presiding member elected from among the members themselves.
The multiparty system in Ghana permits citizens to freely join any political party of their choice. Parliamentary aspirants from the two main political parties won the parliamentary elections between 2005 and 2020 to become members of parliament.
Members of parliament from 2005 to date are Alhaji Bukari Amadu Sorogho, who was a member of Parliament from 2005 to 2017, Alhaji Abu-bakar, and Saddique Boniface 2017 - 2021.
