These diverse groups, each with their own language, culture, and traditions, contribute to the rich tapestry of African heritage. Nigeria
Nigeria, a West African nation, is home to numerous tribes, each with distinct cultures and histories.

- Yoruba: The Yoruba people, numbering around 47 million, are predominantly found in Nigeria and Benin. They have inhabited Southwest Nigeria since as early as 9,000 BC. The Yorubas are globally known for their history, culture, art and literature. Fela, Wole Soyinka, Wizkid, Davido, Tiwa Savage, David Oyelowo, John Boyega, Anthony Joshua etc are a few Yorubas who have taken their culture to the world.
- Igbo: The Igbo tribe consists of about 45 million people. They are based primarily in modern day Nigeria where they make up over 18% of the population though they are also found in Guinea. The Igbos are undeniably known world wide. Chinua Achebe wrote about the Igbo culture alot. Chinwetalu Ejiofor, Zain Asher, Ckay, Flavour, Chimamanda, phyno, P-square are Igbos who have taken their culture to the world.
- Hausa: The Hausa are the largest tribe in Africa with an estimated population of 74 million, mostly based in Nigeria. The richest black man in the world Aliko Dangote is Hausa along with his brother from the same state Kano Abdulsamad Rabiu (BUA).

South Africa
South Africa, located at the southern tip of Africa, is renowned for its diverse ethnic groups.
- Zulu: The Zulu people are the largest ethnic group in South Africa, numbering around 10 million today. The Zulu tribe is popular outside Africa. They’ve been featured in music, documentaries and movies. Shaka the Zulu was a warrior king whose popularity is well spread.
- Khoisan (Bushmen): Known as the first people of South Africa, the Khoisan are renowned for their close connection to nature. Traditionally, hunter-gatherers, the San people, lived off the land, roaming vast tracts of bushveld across southern Africa. The San were southern Africa's great artists, creating rock art that dates back thousands of years.
- Xhosa: The Xhosa recognize uThixo or uQamata as their Supreme Being, though daily spiritual practices focus on ancestral intermediaries.
Zulu People

- Asante: This tribe are known for their history and culture. Popular American hip hop artist was named after this tribe Asante. The Ashanti live in central Ghana in western Africa approximately 300km. away from the coast. Their religion involves the supernatural and spiritual with ancestors very important in family life.
Other African Tribes
- Fulani: The Fulani people of West Africa are the largest nomadic group in the world, primarily nomadic herders and traders. They are predominantly in West Africa and are found in 18 African countries. They have their own language known as Fula. They are one of the few Africa tribes to adopt Islam, with 98% of the Fulani being Muslim.
- Berbers/Amazigh: They are predominantly found in North Africa. They are predominantly found in Morocco 🇲🇦 and Algeria 🇩🇿 They known for their use of silver silver. Their culture and history well documented and have a unique language and writing system that traces back to ancient Egypt.
- Maasai: Perhaps the most famous in East Africa is the Maasai tribe. The tribe still tend to their cattle with a mix of milk and cows’ blood central to their diet. The majority live in Kenya and their homes close to many of the famous East African game parks have meant they have had significant contact with overseas tourists.
- Himba: The Himba are nomadic pastoralists who travel between waterholes with their cattle and goats. The Himba are known as the "Red People of Africa" due to their distinctive otjize body paint-a mixture of butter, animal fat, and ochre.
- Hadzabe: The Hadzabe of Tanzania are the last true nomads, hunter-gatherers of East Africa. They hunt with bow and arrow while the womenfolk search out edible berries and fruits. Tourists with a spirit of adventure can actually travel with them although there are not many ‘’creature comforts’’ for those who do.
