Lewa Safari Camp: Your Gateway to Wildlife Adventure in Kenya

Lewa Safari Camp, located in the far western side of Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, is a tented camp overlooking Mount Kenya and the reserve. Originally built as a base for the ranch manager in the 1980s, it is now run by Elewana, an established safari company in East Africa. This camp is a great addition to a Kenya safari for someone who prioritizes access to the wildlife and land over distinctive accommodation.

A Haven for Wildlife Enthusiasts

Staying on Lewa never disappoints; visitors to the conservancy can revel in a top notch safari experience. The game viewing in Lewa Conservancy is outstanding. The Big Five-lion, leopard, rhino, Cape Buffalo, and elephant-are all numerous in the Conservancy. This conservancy is a terrific place to view the endangered black rhino as it is home to about 10% of Kenya’s rhino population. Game drives in Lewa are simply and unforgettably spectacular.

Previously a cattle ranch, the owners at that time dedicated all their land to the conversation of the local wildlife, particularly rhino. In 2009, Lewa Safari Camp was born, and became the excellent, eco-friendly camp we know today.

Comfort and Style in the African Wilderness

Lewa Safari Camp boasts 12 en-suite safari tents, two of which are family suites. There are 15 large tented units, each with good distance and shrubbery between them allowing for plenty of privacy and space. Comfortable tents with typical safari-style décor each have a thatched roof and veranda. The room interiors are simple but stylish offering great comfort and a ‘homely’ feel. The rooms can either be laid out as doubles, twins, or triples for children under the age of 16. All tents are thatched-roofed and include a bed, a writing desk, en-suite facilities, and a spacious veranda.

The main areas of the camp have a very friendly and relaxed atmosphere, with guests having the options of chilling out on the sofas, going for a dip in the pool, or having a drink at the bar. The Lewa Safari Camp main areas include a lounge and dining area for relaxing after a day of exciting game viewing, as well as gardens and a swimming pool to soak up the calming ambiance or cool off. Table tennis in the outdoor lounge area is great fun for when guests are in between game drives!

Activities and Experiences

The game viewing in Lewa is excellent and optional activities include horse- and camelback riding, quad biking, a local village visit, and hiking in the Ngare Ndare rainforest with a dip in a waterfall. Note, it is Lewa Wilderness that has the horses and Lewa Safari Camp guests can ride with them at Lewa Wilderness if they have availability.

Dining

Whether you are being served your breakfast by the pool in the outdoor lounge area, a picnic in the plains themselves, or afternoon tea, you can rest assured that the food, made with fresh ingredients, will be delicious!

Exceptional Service and Skilled Guides

Staff members are friendly and attentive. All of the guides at Lewa Safari are highly skilled, with some having worked within the Conservancy for over fifteen years.

Important Considerations

The entire property is fenced, making it ideal for families with younger children. *This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns.

Awards and Recognition

Winner of a passel of well-deserved awards, Lewa Safari Camp is the inspired result of the pioneering Craig family’s multi-generational experience in one of Africa’s most beautiful locales, the vast Laikipia Plateau. Views of the rolling savannahs and riverine forests of the Plateau and of lordly Mount Kenya are grand and ever-changing, and the camp’s service is at Africa’s toppest and cheeriest notch.

A Note on Intimacy and Views

The downsides to Lewa Safari Camp are that it is the largest property in Lewa, meaning it lacks the more intimate feel of the other properties in the Conservancy and it does not have the advantage of having close ties to the Craig-Douglas family that founded Lewa (as Lewa House and Lewa Wilderness do). The camp is the former ranger post, so the views from camp aren’t as sweeping and spectacular as the other camps in the Lewa.
