Kisite Mpunguti Marine National Park is a unique and vital ecosystem located off the southern coast of Mombasa, near Wasini Island, in Kenya. The park combines Kisite Marine National Park and Mpunguti Marine National Reserve, covering an area of approximately 15 square miles featuring coral reefs and four small islands, including Kisite Island and the three Mpunguti Islands (Juu, Chini, and Liwe la Jahazi). The marine park is actually a combined protected area of the over 4 square miles of Kisite Marine National Park and almost 11 square miles of Mpunguti Marine National Reserve.

These islands serve as a crucial breeding ground for various bird species, including migrating crab plovers and roseate terns. Kisite Island is primarily a small, undergrowth coral island with significant environmental value as avi-fauna breeding grounds, especially for migrating crab plovers and roseate terns, while the tri Mpunguti Islands (Juu, Chini and Liwe la Jahazi) are largely covered with dense forest. The dense forest cover characterize the Mpunguti Islands, hence adding to the park’s biodiversity.

The park is home to some of the most diverse and plentiful marine life seen in the region: 250 recorded fish species, 70 resident dolphins, 56 genera of corals, 10 species of mangroves and dozens of sea turtles, whales, seabirds, gastropods, and endemic crustaceans such as the coconut crab. These support an incredible array of endemic marine life and migratory birds with over 45 coral species, 360 fish species, including grouper, wrasse, pufferfish, scorpionfish, damselfish, snapper, ray, turtle, and dolphin.
During certain times of the year, humpback whale and whale shark may also be spotted in the deep park waters and Mpunguti Chini Island is where you will find endemic coconut crabs. Visitors are treated to sightings of humpback whale and the whale sharks.
