The Moi International Sports Centre was constructed in 1987 by the Kenyan government in partnership with the Chinese government. Construction works begun in 1982 when Kenya won the bid to host the 4th All African Games in 1987. The stadium was designed by a Chinese architect, Wang Defu, who noted that the design was inspired by a flower.
Located approximately 15km from Nairobi City Centre, the Moi International Sports Centre is located in Kasarani along the busy Thika SuperHighway. This multi-purpose complex is the largest stadium in Kenya with a 60,000 seat arena aside from VIP lounges and hospitality suites. Historical Significance

When opened, it was among the most modern not only in Kenya, but worldwide, having a corporate tier of seating long before it became a standard. This level is located between to others, the upper of which consists of 24 massive sections combined to create a ring. Thanks to its size and location it was host to numerous large events, starting with All-African Games (1987), through World Social Forum (2007), to MTV Africa Music Awards (2009). Last of the events happened just before the renovation works launched in Jan 2010.
The stadium was closed in January 2010 for renovation works worth KSh.900 million, funded by a grant to the Government of Kenya by the Government of China. Chinese firm, Sheng Li Engineering Construction Company Limited, was contracted to conduct the renovations. The stadium was handed back to authorities by Chinese contractors in Sept 2012.
The first thing the facility will go through is to have its lighting system upgraded. Namwamba set a deadline of 2025 as the time the stadium should be ready enough to meet CAF’s standards.
The presidential suite was built to purposely accommodate the late Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi who would take a nap before games or at halftime. The VIP area went through the most changes.

The Kasarani stadium located within the Moi International Sports Centre hosted the 2017 World U18 Championships in Athletics and the 2021 World Athletics U20 Championships. World-class preparations were undertaken to host the last leg of the 2021 World Continental Tour dubbed the Kip Keino Classic on 18th September 2021 in Nairobi, Kenya.The 3rd edition of this Continental Tour was held at the same venue on 7th May 2022. It was as intriguing as the previous edition where local and international athletes competed against each other spike against heel leaving the spectators hysterical and on their feet-a vivid memory for all who were present at the venue.The 4th edition came with its share of surprises as new and existing contenders battled it out on the Tatum track arena against the champions.
