Juja is a vibrant town in Kiambu County, Kenya, located approximately 30 kilometers north of Nairobi, nestled between Thika and Ruiru along the Thika Superhighway. Once known as 'Weru wa Ndarugu', the Ndarugu plains, Juja's name is steeped in colonial history and local superstitions.

The Enigmatic Mohamed Hassan and Juja's Role in Kenya's Freedom Struggle
In a famous 1946 photograph featuring Jomo Kenyatta and other top officials of the Kenya African Union (KAU), an unidentified Somali man sat in the front row with his legs crossed. For decades, the identity of this man, who funded KAU and later the Mau Mau, remained a mystery.
Recently, this man was identified as Mohamed Hassan. His daughter, Amina Mohammed, a former broadcaster with the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation, shared his story. "Nobody seems to recognise my father," she said. "He was perhaps the only Somali detained during the Mau Mau war, and he lost all he had acquired, but nobody has written about him."

During the independence struggle, Hassan's shop in Juja served as a crucial stopover for Mau Mau guerrillas on their way to the forest. According to former Juja MP Gitu Kahengeri, a Mau Mau freedom fighter, "Hassan was targeted by the colonial government because of the support that he gave to Mau Mau."
An archival letter from February 27, 1954, written by Ndarugu Plantations Limited, ordered Hassan to vacate the shop "until the end of emergency" at the instigation of the colonial government. Furthermore, a Gazette notice dated July 15, 1954, prohibited members of the Kikuyu, Embu, or Meru tribes from being or remaining in Hassan’s business premises.

Hassan's Shop: A Symbol of Inter-Race Relations
Hassan's shop was strategically located and offered restaurant and butchery services with separate entrances for European settlers, Asians and Arabs, and Africans. It also featured a petrol pump and was known as one of the best-lit areas in Juja.
Jomo Kenyatta would often visit the shop with his supporters to strengthen KAU. Hassan became one of Kenyatta's financial backers, and his employee, Ali Mohammed Kabati, recalled Kenyatta visiting the shop to obtain funds.

Despite his contributions, Hassan's role in Kenya's independence struggle has been largely overlooked. After independence, Somalis were often ostracized due to the Shifta war crisis.
In 1969, Hassan wrote a letter to President Jomo Kenyatta seeking the restoration of his confiscated property. Unfortunately, he never received justice and died a dejected man.
Today, Hassan’s shop stands as a reminder of the sacrifices made during the freedom movement and the complex inter-race relations in colonial Kenya. "We don’t know who owns that shop now, but our father died trying to get justice on his properties. He never did," said Ms. Mohammed.
The Legacy of William Northrup McMillan and Juja Farm
The history of Juja is also intertwined with the story of Lord William Northrup McMillan, an American millionaire who arrived in Nairobi around 1900. McMillan acquired approximately 19,000 acres of land on the road to Thika, establishing what became known as Juja Farm.
According to private records from the McMillan Memorial Library, McMillan brought two statues from West Africa. Due to superstitions surrounding Juja Farm, McMillan's wife buried the idols in Ndarugu Valley, near Thika Town. This event contributed to the name "Juja" becoming prominent in Kenyan colonial history.

McMillan invested heavily in Juja Farm, equipping it with modern amenities such as a refrigerating plant, electric lights, and a machine shop. Juja Farm became a thriving community, complete with a Post Office, Telegraph Office, and housing for various employees.
Juja Farm was also known for its hospitality, hosting passing safaris, including one led by Colonel Theodore Roosevelt. During World War I, Juja House served as a hospital and convalescent home for British Officers.
In 1919, McMillan sold Juja Farm to Mr. F.N. Nettlefold, describing it as "the finest big game estate in all Africa." McMillan passed away in 1925 and was buried on Ol Donyo Sabuk.
