The Human Development Index (HDI) for Morocco published by the United Nations is a composite measure including life expectancy, educational attainment, and income level.

It aims to measure not only incomes but life quality as well.

The HDI is the most widely used indicator of human development and has changed how people view the concept.

Understanding the Human Development Index

Definition: The Human Development Index measures three basic dimensions of human development: long and healthy life, knowledge, and a decent standard of living.

The index incorporates three dimensions of human development: a long and healthy life, knowledge, and decent living standards.

Various indicators are used to quantify how countries perform on each dimension.

The indicators used in the 2022 report were life expectancy at birth; expected years of schooling for children; mean years of schooling for adults; and gross national income per capita.

The indicators are used to create a health index, an education index and an income index, each with a value between 0 and 1.

The geometric mean of the three indices-that is, the cube root of the product of the indices-is the human development index.

The data used to calculate HDI comes mostly from United Nations agencies and international institutions, such as United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the World Bank, International Monetary Fund and Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

Rarely, when one of the indicators is missing, cross-country regression models are used.

The Human Development Report includes data for all 193 member states of the United Nations, as well as Hong Kong SAR and Palestine.

However, the Human Development Index is not calculated for two UN member states: Monaco and North Korea, only some components of the index are calculated for these two countries.

The Human Development Report also reports the HDI for various groups of countries.

The 2025 Human Development Index (HDI), published by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), ranks Morocco 120th out of 193 countries, classifying it as a nation with «high human development».

In the previous edition of the report, Morocco also ranked 120th but with a lower score of 0.698, placing it in the «medium human development» category at the time.

Regional and Global Context

Regionally, Morocco ranks 13th among Arab countries.

Globally, Iceland tops the list, followed by Norway, Switzerland, Denmark, Germany, Sweden, and Austria.

The report warns of a widening gap between wealthy and poorer nations.

UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner noted: «For decades, we were on a path to achieve very high human development by 2030. But this slowdown now threatens global progress».

The report also highlights that disparities between countries with low and very high HDI scores have worsened for the fourth year in a row, undermining a long-standing trend toward narrowing global inequality.

Artificial Intelligence and Human Development

How will AI change the world?

This year’s report explores how artificial intelligence can reinvigorate human development but also warns of weak global progress.

The report points to persistent digital literacy gaps and limited access to digital devices and internet connectivity, even in high-income countries.

It also highlights inequalities in AI-driven healthcare research, which is heavily concentrated in a few wealthy nations.

Within Africa, Egypt, Morocco, and South Africa are leading contributors to AI research on cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and cancer.
