Hawassa University: A History of Growth and Academic Excellence

Hawassa University (HU) (Amharic: ሀዋሳ ዩኒቨርሲቲ) is a residential national university in Hawassa, Sidama Region, Ethiopia. It is located approximately 278 kilometres (173 mi) south of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Brief History and Establishment

Hawassa University (HU) is one of the first-generation universities in Ethiopia, with its establishment laid as Awassa College of Agriculture (ACA) in 1976, admitting 217 students. It was later restructured and promoted to a university in 2000, named “Debub University” with the merger of ACA and two other colleges in southern Ethiopia: Wondogenet College of Forestry and Natural Resources, established in 1978; and Dilla College of Teachers’ Education and Health Sciences, established in 1996.

At the moment, Hawassa University (HU) encompasses 9 colleges, 3 institutes, and 7 campuses set in and outside of Hawassa City. It has been recently differentiated by MoSHE/MoE as one of the 8 Research Universities in Ethiopia, so it is working towards becoming one of the top ten research universities in East Africa by 2030. HU has been largely contributing its part to the overall development of the country through teaching, training, research and community services over the last 46 years by establishing and improving different centers of excellence at colleges, institutes and university levels.

HU offers 81 undergraduate programs, 108 Masters programs, and 16 PhD programs.

Academic Capacity

In terms of academic capacity, HU hosts more than 32,000 students enrolled in 309 academic programs: 103 undergraduate; 195 graduate (141 Masters, 54 PhD); and 11 Medical Specialty (10 specialty and 1 sub-specialty) programs in the regular and continuing education programs. Moreover, HU has 10,988 staff out of which 2,213 are academic (20 expatriates and 460 female) staff.

HU has established a long-standing collaboration with different national and international partners working closely on teaching, research and community services towards its goals. Hence, HU runs 63 collaborative projects (53 international and 10 local) involving 101 global and 91 local partners.

School of Environment, Gender and Development Studies (SEGDS)

The School of Environment, Gender and Development Studies (SEGDS) was established in the year 2008.

School of wildlife and ecotourism

The School of wildlife and ecotourism was launched in 1999 E.C.

School of Nutrition, Food Science and Technology (SNFST)

College of Agriculture, by bringing together the MSc of Applied Human Nutrition (AHuNu); the BSc program of Food Science and Technology (FSPT) as part of the business process re-engineering at the university level. The SNFST was organized as an institute and Dr. Kebede Abegaz was the first Director.

The Food Science and Postharvest Technology, FSPT was launched as a 3 years degree program in 2002 and enrolled students for the first time in the 2002/3 academic year. Two of the graduates of the first batches of the FSPT programs at Hawassa University (Drs Tadesse Fikre Teferra and Tafese Bosha) are now PhDs and are serving at the same University. The MSc in AHuNu was launched in 2007, enrolled students and many of the first couples of batches are PhDs serving as advisors at national and international high offices on nutrition and health programs.

As part of today's SNFST academic unit, a BSc program in Human Nutrition, HuNu and MSc in Food Science and Technology were launched in the 2010/11 academic year. As of the current academic year, the SNFST is running two BSc (FSPT, HuNu) and three MSc (AHuNu, Food Science and Technology, FST; as well as Food Safety and Quality Management, FSQM).

The staffs of Hawassa university who have great steaks in the launching of the independent programs in the Food Science and Human Nutrition areas were Drs Kebede Abegaz and Yewulsew Abebe. Funds and development projects brought by Drs. Kebede Abegaz, Yewulsew Abebe and Henok Kurabachew, as well as Mekonnen Melaku, Fikadu Reta and currently Gezahegn Nigusse have taken turns in leading the independent programs early on and lately, the SNFST.

SNFST publishes "(Food and Nutrition eNewsletter)", a bimonthly issue since January 2021. This is a relaxed and informal communication medium for the Food and Nutrition Community of Hawassa University and is also open to volunteer contributors of content and ideas.

Wondo Genet College of Forestry and Natural Resources (WGCF-NR)

Wondo Genet College of Forestry and Natural Resources (WGCF-NR), which is one of the four campuses of Hawassa University (HU), is situated in southern Ethiopia. Natural resources are at the core human civilization. They are engine for economic advancement and societal wellbeing.

Vision: WGCF-NR aspires to upgrade itself into a University College and shall be a centre of excellence in the research, education & extension of forestry and natural resources management.
