Golfing in Cape Town, South Africa: A Premier Experience

Cape Town, South Africa, offers a variety of exceptional golfing experiences, blending stunning landscapes with world-class courses. From historic clubs to modern designs, the region caters to golfers of all levels.

The Metropolitan Golf Club: A Jewel in Central Cape Town

Welcome to The Metropolitan Golf Club, one of South Africa’s premiere golf courses. The Metropolitan golf course has remained the jewel of central Cape Town since its creation in 1895.

The MET (as it is affectionally known by its members and visitors) was commissioned by the City of Cape Town and rebuilt in 2010 by local Golf Course Architect, Mark Müller. The Met has 18 holes, each with separate tees, together with 14 world class greens that share 9 beautiful fairways. Bent Grass greens and Kikuyu fairways line this parkland designed ground.

Metropolitan’s greens were seeded with a hardy version of bent grass when the golf course was rebuilt in 2008. This allows them to run at a consistent stimp roll of between 10 and 10.5 throughout the year. They truly are 5-star! We invite you to join us for a spectacular round of golf.

Golf Governance in the Western Cape

Amateur golf in the Western Cape is governed by three different bodies: Western Province Golf Union (14,000 golfers in 22 clubs), Southern Cape Golf Union (6,000 members in 25 clubs) and Boland Golf Union, which has around 12,000 members in 33 clubs. Each of these independent authorities is in turn affiliated to the South African Golf Association in Johannesburg.

Prominent Golf Course Architects

Peter Matkovich is South Africa’s most prolific modern golf course architect and a number of his designs feature prominently in the regional rankings for Western Cape: Arabella made a stunning debut at the end of the 1990s and a couple of new millennium tracks - Pinnacle Point and De Zalze - have also attracted high praise.
