Giga Chad: The Origin and Evolution of the Ultimate Alpha Male Meme

The term "gigachad" has become ubiquitous on the internet, particularly in forums and social media. It is used to describe men who embody the epitome of masculinity, confidence, and physical attractiveness. A "gigachad" is an idealized version of a “chad,” which is a stereotypically confident and handsome man. The term came from various memes and online communities and may be used seriously, humorously, or ironically.

"Gigachad" is an online slang term that describes a person with the “ultimate” male form. Big, muscular, handsome, and confident, a gigachad is the stereotypical alpha male. Chiseled like a Greek god, his features and physique are the stuff of legends. A gigachad is a variation of the slang label “chad.” “Chad” is another way of saying “bro,” or to refer to someone as a stereotypical alpha male type. A gigachad may have more going for him than just physical appearance; he could also be a man who plans and executes big goals.

In today’s digital world, this term has become common to describe ultimate masculinity. But being a gigachad goes beyond just looking good or being strong-it's about a confident attitude, or a way of carrying oneself that exudes charisma and inspiration. Gigachad memes are all about societal norms. Through funny and absurd images, they poke fun at our ideas of success, attractiveness, and confidence.

The slang term Chad has historically been applied in different contexts. The term has come into use in incel forums and as internet slang to refer to sexually active, supposedly genetically superior men, or "alpha males". Within the manosphere and internet culture, Chads are generally viewed as constituting the top decile in terms of genetic fitness. In online animation drawings in the manosphere, a Chad is often depicted as a muscular blond man with very pronounced masculine features.

One such depiction, in the "Virgin vs. Chads are sometimes portrayed as the opposite to "omega" or "beta" males, and as physically attractive. "Gigachad" is a related internet meme that uses black-and-white photographs of a muscular male model.

GigaChad is the ultimate Chad-the hypermasculine ideal, the alpha, the most confident meme of a man you’ll find on the internet.

Everybody knows that if you post a GigaChad picture, your opinion is correct.

But while Khalimov has become the public, chiseled face of GigaChad, the real story is more complicated than that. Evidence for that idea (aside from his cartoonish, bicycle-pumped muscles) includes the fact that there are no behind-the-scenes photos of GigaChad’s model like there are for the other models in Sudmalis’ series, as pointed out in an article by Dude Products.

Artur Farad, a fitness model, is a likely candidate for being the real inspiration. A look on his Instagram account shows he does bear a real resemblance to the impossibly square-jawed model.

Despite the unlikelihood of Khalimov being a real person, the ruse has been maintained over the years. After the GigaChad picture initially went viral, berlin.1969 responded to the attention with a friendly post thanking his fans for the attention.

“Must admit I’m shocked that there are so many of you and that you are not negative … I have nothing to say to you, probably because I look much more interesting from your words,” he wrote. “It’s very flattering and overshadows my commonness. Thanks for the kind words. Thank you for the positive energy. don’t doubt guys I mentally return it to you. Take your time and keep calm. Take care of yourself and your loved ones … Yours faithfully.

“gigachad is real, and humble and he seems like a pretty nice guy. he’s an actual Chad,” wrote one redditor in response.

Who Is Giga Chad?

First and foremost, what is a Chad? According to the Dictionary, a Chad is a disparaging internet slang term for a popular, confident, sexually active young white male. However, on the internet, Chad is given a larger-than-life persona when prefixed by the Greek term Giga, which translates to “giant.”

The online image of this character of a “great man” is inspired by model Ernest Khalimov. Russian photographer Krista Sudmalis captured Khalimov as part of her art project “Sleek’N’Tears” Berlin. The post was uploaded to the /r/bodybuilding subreddit and received over 500 points and over 100 comments.

Upon seeing the post and image, commenters were impressed with Khalimov’s physique, saying, “How am I the same species as this guy?” “I was 100% sure it was CGI until I entered his IG account.” “A true genetic freak with 10 pack and all :D”

The 10-pack certainly got Khalimov talked about, and on October 16, 2017, his image was submitted to the /pol/ board on 4chan. It is said to be a parody account of Ernest Khalimov, using his face and physique. Since little background is available on Khalimov prior to the art project, he seems to embody a constructed persona. In fact, further investigation indicates that the model himself is also a fabricated character.

However, the actual model photoshopped to perfection to become Khalimov - and later Giga Chad - could be Artur Farad, a fitness model based in Dubai. We see an example from Joyreactor by user Sraka, where anonymous commenters assumed a Giga Chad stance to comment on a statement supposedly. Because Giga Chad is the peg for perfection, whatever he says flies.

Redditors also posted the same anonymous thread, changing the statements to satisfy other funny comments and perspectives. This one by dewd546 shows a disparity in treating women. The post was uploaded on r/greentext in 2021 and got 2,400 upvotes.

Anyone noted to be aligned with or living up to the Giga Chad standard is considered alpha, while others were beta or second-rate by comparison. It breathed new life and lent new meaning to these older terms, making them relatable to today’s slang natives.

The Giga Chad Online Spread

The image that became known as GigaChad is the fruit of an art project called sleekntears, created by the artist Krista Sudmalis. At the time, the person wasn’t known as GigaChad.

“Years of Bogdanoff research into genetic augmentation has finally yielded fruit,” reads the post, referencing the Bogdanoff twins, a pair of French celebrity brothers who became memes themselves for their extreme, plastic surgery-altered features. “Behold, the Gigachad. The perfect human specimen destined to lead us against the reptilians.

The Evolution of the Giga Chad Meme

On October 16th, 2017, a photo of Khalimov was submitted to the /pol/ board on 4chan, which described him as "Gigachad. On February 17th, 2018, Redditor ForgottenShark uploaded a photograph of Khalimov titled "Gigachad, the destroyer of virgins" to the /r/Bossfight subreddit.

In March 2021, GigaChad saw a spike in popularity online after a montage of his photographs was used in the video version of Average Fan vs. The video features the sped-up video "itzmefraz episode 7" by YouTube user itz me Fraz as "fan" and a slideshow of GigaChad images as "enjoyer." The video features the song Can You Feel My Heart by Bring Me The Horizon.

Until April 2021, the person writing as Khalimov did not speak about the likeness being used in GigaChad and Average Enjoyer memes, also disabling comments on his Instagram posts. On April 13th, 2021, Ernest Khalimov, wrote from his Instagram account berlin.1969 and spoke about the GigaChad memes, writing that "he likes them" and inviting everyone to comment on the post.

The Giga Perfection Cult

The Giga Chad and Giga Stacy memes gave birth to the male and female ideals of perfection. In one regard, they became images to aspire for, especially when it came to physicality and fitness.

The Giga lifestyle apparel brand was riding on this wave, which kicked off in 2022. Because having Giga Chad’s Adonis-like physique seems almost otherworldy, the internet was quick to box him into this impossible ideal and stereotype.

Author of “Breaking the Male Code: Unlocking the Power of Friendship,” Rob Garfield, penned a piece in The Guardian saying that masculinity is a construct that can be imagined, reimagined, and reshaped over generations, much like this concept of today’s Giga Chad. Garfield adds that in itself, masculinity as a whole isn’t toxic because traditional behaviors associated with masculinity are pretty lovely and appreciated. However, he cautions that it’s extremism and what we do with it that makes masculinity toxic.

By amplifying traits like physical strength, stoic confidence, and a nonchalant attitude, the Giga Chad meme plays with this modern concept of masculinity, juxtaposing the idea of an “ideal” man in a humorous way. It’s harmless as long as diverse shapes, sizes, and ideals are accepted.

Susan Krauss Withborne, PhD., writes in Psychology Today that the hubris hypothesis is what makes masculinity toxic. This hubris manifests when one compares himself favorably and explicitly with others. And it’s hubris expressed at the expense of others that makes bragging so objectionable.

The internet’s widely satiric landscape levels the playing field. Accepting the Chad ideal has a duality: either you use it as a peg to be better or diss it altogether as an unattainable standard against today’s celebration of authenticity.

Cultural Relevance of Giga Chad

Average Fan vs. Riffing on the idea that posting an image of GigaChad automatically makes everything you say correct, a smiling devil-may-care version of the meme was integrated into the popular Average Fan vs.

Another variation of the meme has GigaChad reacting to country names like Georgia, Turkey, or Hungary by acting like they aren’t the names of countries but are other places, nouns, or adjectives. Think it’s stupid?

According to a survey of both men and women done by DatePsychology.com, women ultimately rated the GigaChad images as “below average” looking. In fact, men rated him notably higher-a 4.88 average on a 7.0 scale, compared to women’s 3.58.

What is ‘Chad Face‘?

The Chad Face (also referred to as the Gen Z lip sync face), is a social media trend in which men emulate the facial structure of the hyper-masculine GigaChad. This included “mewing,” which is a tongue and mouth exercise meant to help with the type of jawline definition seen on the GigaChad. Gen Alpha amended traditional mewing to include a “shushing” gesture and a tracing of the jawline with a finger, indicating they wanted to remain silent.

Some still see him as the ultimate alpha who can never be wrong. And to some, being a real GigaChad just means being positive and trusting in yourself.

The Chad Meme: Variations and Interpretations

The “Yes meme” is a popular variation of the Chad meme series, portrayed the well-built and confident Gigachad responding with “Yes” to various statements. As a versatile meme, Yes Chad is used to express a wide range of scenarios, showcasing resilience and the embodiment of a “sigma male.” The phenomenon also extends to Soyjaks vs.

With the Yes Chad meme regularly emerging in various cultural backgrounds, the character has evolved into a symbol of outward confidence, even regardless of one’s appearance features. The Yes Chad is stoic and immune to embarrassment.

Soyjaks vs. Chads

The phenomenon known as Soyjaks vs. Chads, alternately labeled as Other Anime Spoiler and Other Game Leaks, revolves around a Yes Chad-style template where different topics are contrasted through dialogues involving Soyjaks and interactions between two Chads.

‘Yes, meme’ refers to the other exploitable Chad meme. The Chad meme portrays a well-built blond man with blue eyes and a beard and is used to mock the man who appears and acts too manly, that on Internet culture is also known as GigaChad, Chad to out-Chad all Chads, the Alpha Male of the Alpha Males, and massive Chad. The Chad meme originated in 2019.
