Ghana's Year of Return: Citizenship Opportunities for the African Diaspora

Ghana is one of the fastest-developing countries in Africa, offering a solution that allows all African descendants to become citizens without requiring significant investment. It means that hundreds of millions of possible applicants from the Americas, Europe, and even other continents may become passport holders of Ghana.

Ghana offers a unique naturalisation scheme for African descendants to become citizens in Africa; there is no other such solution on the continent. The first Ghana naturalisation program started in 2019 for applicants who are descendants of slaves from Africa, and they received their citizenship in the same year. Subsequently, the government launched a new naturalisation program from 2020 to 2030 called "Beyond Return," which fosters the relationship with diasporans. The November group was the largest one granted citizenship since Ghana launched the "Year of the Return" program, aimed at attracting the Black diaspora, in 2019. Ghana's Tourism Authority and the Office of Diaspora Affairs have extended the program into "Beyond the Return".

Pathways to Ghanaian Citizenship

The Ghana Citizenship Act provides two main pathways for diaspora Ghanaians: citizenship by descent and naturalisation. Citizenship by descent is available to individuals with Ghanaian ancestry, enabling them to claim nationality without undergoing lengthy procedures. Naturalisation, on the other hand, requires applicants to fulfil the requirements, such as a period of residence, good character, and language proficiency in English or a Ghanaian language. This pathway is suitable for those who have integrated into Ghanaian society or have established strong ties with the country.

Benefits of Ghanaian Citizenship

The passports of Ghana allow you to enter 65 countries visa-free, and it is enough to show your ID card if you wish to visit most of the other ECOWAS countries. The travel documents are valid for ten years, and thanks to diplomatic efforts, it is the 74th strongest passport in the World. Just so you know, the strongest African passport is from the Seychelles, which allows entry into 156 countries without a visa and is one of the strongest travel documents globally.

Legal provisions aim that diaspora Ghanaians with dual citizenship can enjoy rights similar to those of natural-born citizens, including the right to purchase property, establish businesses, and participate in national elections. Dual citizenship is also allowed.

On acquiring the dual citizenship, a holder will be entitled to apply for Ghanaian passport in addition to their US passport. It is an offence for a holder of dual citizenship to use two passports interchangeably. You should use only one passport. When using the British passport you need not procure a Ghana visa.

Application Process

Applicants are required to complete a Dual Nationality Application Form at a cost of $200. Prospective applicants who live outside the locations indicated above and wish to purchase the form can send money order of $200 per form with a note requesting for the Dual Nationality Application Form.
