Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO): A Comprehensive Guide to Courses and Programs

The Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) is a federal government university located in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, Nigeria. The University is bounded by the communities of Eziobodo, Umuchima, Ihiagwa and Obinze, in Imo State, Nigeria. As the oldest University of Technology in Nigeria, FUTO was established in 1980 by Executive fiat with the composition and appointment of the first provisional Council by Nigeria’s First Executive President, Shehu Shagari. FUTO began with 225 students and 60 staff (28 academic and 32 non-academic).

FUTO students are fondly called Futoites and currently there are over 25,000 students. It is one of the premier technological universities in western Africa. Its student body comprises people from all over west Africa and beyond.

The University Library serves as the pivot of academic pursuit and was opened to students at the Lake Nwaebere campus on 9 November 1981. The pioneer librarian was Mr Joseph Chike Anafulu.

In June 2025, the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) received a donation of digital switches and access points from Interswitch and Cisco.

In 2023, the Federal Medical Centre Owerri was officially upgraded and renamed the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Owerri (FUTHO) to serve as the primary teaching hospital for FUTO's College of Medicine.

  • ACE-FUELS MSc Programs: These are 18-month full-time courses starting each May. Students spend 12 months on campus for learning and instruction, followed by thesis submission and a compulsory 6-month internship with industry partners. The MSc program includes mandatory modules, specialization modules, and project modules, featuring lectures, tutorials, seminars, hands-on sessions, and guest lectures by industry experts.
  • ACE-FUELS PhD Programs: Designed as 36-month full-time courses, also beginning each May. The program includes lectures, tutorials, seminars, hands-on sessions, and guest lectures by foreign academic partners and industry experts.

General Studies Programme

The aim of the general studies programme is to expose students to a course of liberal education through which they can develop and expand their awareness of social, cultural and natural environments with the addition of this programme to the specialized courses being taken by the students. It is expected that the graduates of Nigerian universities would go out better prepared to function well in the society.

  • Dr. Cletus Ikechukwu Anah: An Associate Professor of Urban Sociology at the Directorate of General Studies, Federal University of Technology Owerri. He was the Head of the Social Science Unit (2010-2015), (2017- 2021).
  • Dr. Edward Omeire: A pragmatic rural sociologist and development expert with a passion for exploring the complexities of rural development, ethno-ecology, sustainability, land governance, gender, ICT4DEV, and inclusive health.
  • Dr. Archana Swati Njoku: Passionate about Educational Development System and processes as a key to change and to aid the socio-economic development in the society or the nation at large. She has been passionate about the role of Girl Child, Gender equity, etc.
  • Mrs. Nkeiruka Ezeji: A lecturer in the Directorate of General Studies FUTO. She teaches Social Science-based general courses. Her current research interests include Development Studies, Public Policy/Gerontological studies and Gender Studies.
  • Rev. Sis. Dr. Juliana I. Ikwuka Iheanacho: Of the Social Sciences Unit of the Directorate of General Studies of Federal University of Technology, Owerri.
  • Mrs. Ifeyinwa S. Austin-Egole: Of the Social Science Unit. Her research interests include: Industrial Sociology, Human Resource Management, Flexible Working Arrangements, Work-Life Balance and Globalization.
  • Mr. Damian Kunza Agwadu: A staff of the Directorate of General Studies (Social Science Unit), Federal University of Technology, Owerri. His research interests cut across crime related issues, criminal justice and sociology of law.
  • Mr. Eze Nwosu: An international scholar whose passion is centred in unveiling the dichotomy of politics of international economics Relations between the core and periphery nations, security of States in the dynamic domestic, regional and international environments . His research Interest has covered questions in security studies, Insurgency, Counterinsurgency, intelligence and regional security in Africa.

  • Chukwuma Moses Owuamanam: He is specialized in International Relations & Diplomatic Studies with specific interests in International Image, International Democratization, Africa’s Development, Leadership Character and National Interest.
