The late nineteenth century presented some uncertainty regarding the status of South African cricket. An English cricket team, led by the Surrey amateur Walter Read, embarked on a tour of South Africa from December 1891 to March 1892.
During this tour, Read's team played 20 matches. Apart from the Test match, all of them were against teams of 15, 18 or 22 players. The English team won 13 matches and drew seven.
Matches against major provincial teams like Transvaal and Western Province during this tour are not considered first-class.
The Test Match: A Retrospective Honor
The only first-class match on the tour took place in March against a South African national team. This match was retrospectively awarded Test status. At the time it was known as a South African XI versus W. W. Read's XI.
Read's XI is therefore designated England for this match, and they secured victory by an innings and 189 runs.
