Borosilicate Glass
Borosilicate glass blowing is a unique art that uses a table-mounted torch to melt and manipulate glass. While more niche than traditional glass blowing, this type of flameworking offers participants a unique, hands-on artistic experience.
Borosilicate glass is often referred to as scientific glass or hard glass, and it the same substance as Pyrex. Flameworking Borosilicate glass is different than traditional glass blowing, as it melts at a higher temperature and is safe in scientific applications. Borosilicate glass can withstand high temperatures, and is less prone to thermal shock. This is the reason why its used in making Pyrex bakeware as well as glass pipes. When working borosilicate glass we use a table-top torch and a kiln, as opposed to the long metal blow pipes and furnace used in working with traditional "soft glass" (also known as soda lime glass).
