Early Life and High School Career

Chad Gartland demonstrated his athletic prowess early on. As a high school student, he was a member of the all-conference squads in 2003 and 2004. He participated in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association’s State Games in both 2003 and 2004. Gartland was recognized as a 2004 Charlotte Observer Player to Watch. In 2002, he was the leading scorer for his team, showcasing his offensive capabilities. He earned four letters for the Vikings during his high school career, where he was coached by Mark Calderone. Beyond athletics, Gartland was a member of Who’s Who Among American High School Students and the National Honor Society. He received the USAA National Mathematics Award and served as president of the National Technical Honor Society. In club baseball, playing for Paul Gladu, his team won the 2003 Tampa Bay Sunbowl championship.

Collegiate Career

Wofford College

In 2005, Gartland saw action in 15 games for the Terriers. He recorded an assist for his first career point on the Terriers’ first goal of the campaign in the season opener at Longwood (Sept. 1). He tallied a career-high two shots against Georgia State (Sept. 25) in the Wofford/adidas Invitational. Gartland notched a shot at Longwood, versus North Florida (Sept. 18), at Davidson (Oct. 1) and at Appalachian State (Oct. 12). He also played versus Cornell as part of the tournament.

Niagara County Community College

Prior to joining George Mason University, Gartland played baseball at Niagara County Community College in Sanborn, N.Y. During the 2021 season for the Thunderwolves, he made nine appearances with eight starts, posting a 6-2 record with five complete games, two shutouts, and a 1.88 ERA. He was selected for the Second Team All-Conference.

2022 Season

In 2022, Gartland was selected to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team. He appeared in 16 games with eight starts, posting a 3-2 record with three saves and a 3.99 ERA (67.2 IP, 72 H, 37 R, 30 ER, 20 BB, 65 SO, 10-2B, 2-3B, 5-HR, 6 WP, 7 HBP, 0 BK). The Patriots were 3-5 in his eight starts. 2023 Season

Selected Winston-Salem NCAA Regional All-Tournament Team starting pitcher. Named Most Outstanding Performer of the Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship after tossing 9.2 innings over two appearances and finishing the tournament with a 2.79 ERA and .257 opposing batting average with nine strikeouts and a save. Gartland was also named Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Year and A-10 First Team All-Conference. He helped the Patriots post the lowest ERA in the A-10 (5.02), the lowest opponent batting average in program history (.258) and the most total team strikeouts in school history (516). Including the post-season, led the A-10 in innings pitched (98.1), tied for first in wins (7), was second in ERA (.3.39) and complete games (2), fourth in strikeouts (86), fifth in saves (2) and sixth in opponent average (.240). Led the club in Innings pitched (98.1) and wins (7), was second in strikeouts (86) and third in starts (13) and saves (2). Selected Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week for the week ending April 10 after tossing a complete-game shutout to lead the Patriots past Dayton, 11-0 on Saturday, April 8 at Spuhler Field. Made 17 appearances with 13 starts in his second year with the Patriots.
