Chad Johnson: A Musical Journey and the Legacy of Takehold Records

Chad Johnson is a multifaceted figure in the music industry, known not only for his own musical endeavors but also for his significant contributions as the founder of Takehold Records. This article delves into his discography and the history of the influential record label he created.

Takehold Records: A Foundation in the Hardcore Punk and Indie Rock Scene

Takehold Records originated in 1997 out of Birmingham, Alabama. Founded by Chad Johnson, the label operated out of his garage, initially emerging from a record store and venue called Slacker 66. Over time, it garnered considerable attention within the hardcore punk and indie rock scenes.

Throughout nearly three years, Takehold Records released over 30 records, demonstrating significant potential despite modest sales figures. The label's discography included artists like Twothirtyeight, My Spacecoaster, and Sleeping by the Riverside, with Recess Theory and Fable joining shortly after. In 1999, Takehold Records released Underoath's debut album, "Act of Depression," and also put out an album by Through the Eyes of Katelyn, titled "Your Role Model's Dead."

In 2000, Few Left Standing, Narcissus, and Tantrum of the Muse were signed, leading to a tour alongside Underoath. This tour also featured Twothirthyeight, Further Seems Forever, Tantrum of the Muse, and Narcissus.

Transition to Tooth & Nail Records

Along with acquiring a modest chunk of Takehold’s artists, the label Tooth & Nail Records also hired on Johnson as an artists and repertoire representative. “The process was just crazy. I was at Tooth and Nail for seven years. While I was there, I loved it, [and] it was awesome. But I felt that there was more, and that I really wanted to go deeper (spiritually) with artists, and I found that really to do.

The Philosophy Behind Come&Live! Records

“I do what I do because of Matthew 6:33 which says ‘seek first The Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all will be added unto you.’ What I felt God told me early on was [something along the lines of] ‘if only one person anywhere in the world encountered Jesus for the rest of their lives and for all eternity’” says Johnson, “The whole heartbeat behind [Come&Live!] is love. Having compassion for our fellow men and neighbors and loving others as we love ourselves.

Early into Johnson’s post-college life, he had been making ends meet through a job at a moving company. Things had began to pick up once Johnson started selling merchandise for local bands under the name of a distro titled Slacker66. In due time, Slacker66 had evolved into an actual record store that had been expanded by the means of adding on a skate shop and a music venue.

Yet in the eyes of the general public, the thought of leaving a secure job at a well-off record label is simply terrifying. “I’ve always really enjoyed music, but I never envisioned myself working in the music world. So when I was in college, I just studied psychology, and that I would be going into counseling, therapy or something along those lines.
