Chad Johnson's Diverse Career: From NFL Star to Mexico Stint

Chad Johnson, known for his flamboyant personality and impressive football skills, has had a career filled with unexpected turns. It’s easy to forget that Chad Ochocinco had a stint with the Patriots, but he did-toward the end of his career, after a decade with the Bengals. While he has often praised the team’s culture and Bill Belichick’s leadership, that season marked the worst of his career, and things only went downhill from there. Here’s a look at some key moments and transitions in his professional life.

Chad Johnson NFL Career

Early NFL Success with the Bengals

Chad Johnson began his career in the NFL as a wide receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals. He played in Cincinnati when the franchise lacked competitiveness. Ocho recorded seven 1,000-yard seasons, proving to be one of the most reliable and underrated receivers of the mid-2000s. Remarkably, he achieved all of this without obsessing over his diet-fueling himself with McDonald’s. His illustrious NFL career featured 6 Pro Bowls and 2x First-team All-Pro honors.

In 2005, Ochocinco announced he would keep a list of who covered him well during the season. That praise was so great you would have thought Bodden was Darrelle Revis and Nnamdi Asomugha put together. During a 2009 preseason game, he kicked due to an injury to Shayne Graham. He kicked off and made an extra point, which turned out to be the margin of victory in a 7-6 Cincinnati triumph over New England.

Struggles with the New England Patriots

Ocho arrived so late that he couldn’t get on the same wavelength as Tom Brady. The Patriots expected more out of him and so did he. He needed the offseason training camps which he couldn’t get and then found himself down the pecking order. Despite playing and catching a pass in the Super Bowl, Chad doesn’t think highly of his time in New England. It’s because he knew his timing of arrival there wasn’t optimum.

“I really wanted training camp, I really needed a minicamp. In his single season with the Patriots, Ocho played all 16 games but started only three, catching merely 15 passes for 276 yards and just one TD. He missed the AFC Championship game but did play in the Super Bowl against the Giants, catching a single pass for 21 yards.

Chad Johnson signed with the Miami Dolphins on June 11, 2012, returning him to the city he was born and raised in, and freeing him from the shackles imposed on him during his year-long stint with the New England Patriots.

Brief Stints in Canada and Mexico

Chad had two underwhelming spells in Canada and Mexico but that doesn’t take away from what he achieved playing for the Bengals.

Chad "Ochocinco" Johnson's Can't Cover Me Career Highlights | NFL Legends

Beyond his football career, Johnson has explored various avenues in sports and entertainment.

  • Major League Soccer: While the NFL was busy with the lockout last summer, Ochocinco took part in a four-day tryout with Sporting Kansas City of Major League Soccer.
  • Reality TV: This was Ochocinco's first foray into reality television. I enjoyed "The T.Ocho Show" because you knew he and Terrell Owens were always going to say something newsworthy.
  • Dancing with the Stars: Just what is that? I thought he was going to win ... he had Cheryl Burke as his partner! He made it down to the final four, but eventually didn't get enough love from the public.
  • Racing a Horse: In June of 2007, Ochocinco raced a thoroughbred horse named GetevenwithVonOelhoffen. We've seen the man-versus-horse races before, but I can't remember anyone actually beating the horse like Ochocinco did.

Name Change and Social Media Influence

Johnson briefly yet famously changed his name to Chad Ochocinco in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month in 2006. There's headline grabbing, and then there's "I'm going to change my name because, well, why not?" I thought I'd never get used to calling him Ochocinco, now I can't ever think of going back to saying "Chad Johnson." Although I never got past the fact that if he wanted to be eighty-five, that's actually ochenta y cinco. Ochocinco is just eight-five.

In 2011, CNBC listed Johnson as #1 on their list of “Most Influential Athletes on Social Media,” and after retiring from the NFL, Johnson’s charisma and unique ability to engage the public has kept him in the spotlight.
