Chad Hill Durocs: Breed Characteristics and Lineage

Chad Hill Durocs is owned and operated by Chad Hill and his wife Misty, who are third-generation swine producers. Along with their son Tucker, they live in Lubbock, TX. Their operation focuses on show pig production, running around 50 sows and 15 boars.

Historical Origins of Duroc Hogs

The Duroc-Jersey breed entered into the building of the Duroc-Jersey breed in New Jersey prior to 1850, even at an earlier date. Red hogs were also brought to this country by DeSoto, and trading vessels found their way.

In 1822, a Mr. Clark, who lived near Milton, moved to Florida, Montgomery County, New York. Mr. Clark told Mr. Harry Losey of red pigs in Connecticut that crossed very well with the strain that Mr. Losey developed. Mr. Losey named them Durocs in honor of the stallion. Mr. Losey's fancy was a famous Thoroughbred stallion Duroc, and he purchased some of them and took them home.

Shortly after he coined the name, a Mr. Joseph B. Lyman, of the New York Tribune, who resided in New Jersey, attached to the hogs in the New Jersey area by Joseph B. Lyman, of the New York Tribune, who resided in New Jersey.
