Chad Hambright: A Rising Star in Golf

Chad Hambright, a name known in Southern California golf circles, has been making significant strides in his career. From his early exposure to the game through his father, a golf pro, to his recent achievements, Hambright's journey is one of dedication and passion.

Early Influences and Transition to Golf

While the Hambright family name is well-known in baseball, Chad's path diverged towards golf. His father, a golf pro who helped open The Golf Club at Glen Ivy and currently works at Roger Dunn Golf Shops, introduced all his sons to golf. While his brothers pursued baseball careers, Chad found himself drawn to the greens.

Hambright had grown up around the game. He recalls, “Well, my dad’s been a golf pro since before I was born. He was a long-drive champion, and he basically got us all into golf." He transitioned from baseball to golf after experiencing a pivotal moment: “I’ve played baseball for 13 years, and over the summer before high school, I had a hole-in-one and I just got hooked on golf. I just told my dad one day that I wanted to play golf."

His brothers supported his decision, recognizing his passion for the sport. Hambright shared, “They loved it. They knew I liked golf better. I played golf with them every day over the summer. They like golf and they wish they did what I did, too.”

High School Golf and Development

Dave Baydala, a coach at Temescal Canyon High, recognized Hambright's potential early on. “Those three boys, all of them are just really good athletes," Baydala said. Chad's dedication to golf was evident in his improved performance, dropping his average from 43.1 as a freshman to 38.5.

Temescal Canyon was an undefeated Sunbelt League champ last year. The team's goals were ambitious, aiming to consistently score in the low 190s. Chad Hambright was also coming off a second-round showing in the individual postseason, a run he hoped to top this year.

Reflecting on his early experiences in competitive golf, Hambright noted the increased difficulty: “In all those tournaments, you have the best players on each team. You don’t see one guy shooting in the 100s and 90s. It’s all 70s and 60s and low 80s, and those are all good scores.”

Fallbrook Classic Victory

In March, Hambright secured a significant victory at the Fallbrook Classic. Due to inclement weather, the tournament was reduced to 36 holes. Canyon Lake’s Chad Hambright, the overnight leader by two shots over Franklin Huang after rounds of 65-66=131 (-9), was declared the winner and took home $7,500 for his week’s work.

Over the course of 36 holes, Hambright made just one bogey on the 6,713-yard par 70 layout and ten birdies. Southern California weather has been anything but typical these last several weeks with many storms hitting the area. As a result, ASHER Tour officials reduced this week’s event to the 36 holes already completed through Tuesday. on Wednesday, March 16, Fallbrook received 1.76 inches of rain which rendered the host Golf Club of California at Fallbrook layout unplayable.

Professional Aspirations and Challenges

Hambright turned pro in 2019 and has been striving to make his mark on the professional circuit. Over the last year and a half, I've competed on the PGA Tour Americas and had status on the Korn Ferry Tour. Golf has been my passion and purpose for as long as I can remember.

Professional golf can be as financially demanding as it is competitive. For instance, in 2024, I spent roughly $75,000 alone on golf and travel expenses. The journey has been filled with challenges, sacrifices, and incredible growth - both personally and professionally.
