Historical Context
As a German protectorate state in 1918, soon after World War I ended, Cameroon was divided into two regions, which were under French and British rule. First the French part, in January 1960, and 10 months later the British part. Up until 1972, on the world map, there were two countries named Cameroon, which joined into one country 12 years after their independence, which was known as the Federal Republic of Cameroon, and in that honor the Reunification monument was built in Yaoundé.
The Reunification Monument was built between 1973 and 1976, during the early post-independence period under President Ahmadou Ahidjo, to commemorate the 1961 reunification of British and French Cameroons. After World War I, Cameroon was split between the British and the French. The two parts came together to form the Federal Republic of Cameroon.

Design and Symbolism
Designed by Engelbert Mveng, Armand Salomon, and Gédéon Mpando, the monument features a spiral tower symbolizing the intertwined paths of the two regions, merging into one strong entity. The composition represents a stocky colossus (53 tons, height of 7m) in a seated posture of great stability. He holds a torch in his right arm while his left hand serves to support the four children who are clutched to him.
At its base, a statue of an elderly man holding five children represents the passing of wisdom and cultural heritage to future generations. The children’s visible efforts to climb up the colossus make for a strong vertical tension, echoing the cone-shaped architecture in the background. This shows the unity of the country’s different regions.
Structurally, the monument comprises concrete, ten metal cylinders supporting the logo of the Cameroon golden jubilee. This gives a clearer view of the 50th-anniversary logo. The logo is characteristic of a globe, portraying the map of Cameroon, supported by two hands at its center.
