Bug-A-Salt South Africa Review: Is This Salt Gun Worth the Hype?

The Bug-A-Salt gun has gained popularity as a fun and chemical-free solution for pest control. Marketed as an effective way to eliminate flies, spiders, and other insects, this device uses обычная table salt to deliver a blast of compressed air, dispatching unwanted critters without harming surfaces. But does it live up to the hype? This review delves into the experiences of users in South Africa, weighing the pros and cons to help you decide if the Bug-A-Salt is the right choice for your pest control needs.

What is Bug-A-Salt?

The Bug-A-Salt is a mini pump action shotgun that uses обычная table salt as ammunition. Bug-A-Salt was founded by Lorenzo Maggiore, who had one mission: to turn a boring chore into a fun and engaging experience.

The science behind the gun that makes fly-killing fun is relatively simple. The Bug-A-Salt sends a blast of compressed air speeding towards its target.

Now in its third generation, the Bug-A-Salt continues to deliver smiles and dead flies with every pull of the trigger. Bug-A-Salt is now on its 3rd variation of the product and 3.0 promises to deliver even more power and accuracy whilst still keeping the same mechanism of an air-powered shotgun.

First Impressions and Build Quality

Many users appreciate the novelty and entertainment value of the Bug-A-Salt. It is well made, and hopefully will standup to long term use. Opening up the package and you know your on a mission to wipe out insect .

The Bug-A-Salt 2.0 is a mini pump action shotgun. The Bug-A-Salt 3.0 is the ultimate solution for fun, effective, and chemical-free pest control. Perfect for home, cabin, patio, or BBQ use, the 3.0 model introduces key enhancements including a redesigned cross-bolt safety, upgraded trigger mechanism for lighter pull, and enhanced salt spread pattern.

Taking a few practice shots, I was able to gauge the shot pattern. The spread isn’t bad. It opens up about an inch for every foot of travel. Shot density is pretty good at 3 to 4 feet. For seasoning something on the grill, I’d suggest standing back about 4 feet. That gives you about a “minute of burger” grouping.

Effectiveness on Different Pests

This gun is great on flies, slugs, and other creatures with soft skeletal bodies. It destroys gnats, fruit flies, small moths, etc.

Limitations

Do not expect it to work on bug with the harder extraskeletal bodies, i.e. wasps, hornets, etc. Tried this on Wasps and Carpenter Bees. Doesn't work so hot. I bought this hoping it would kill wood bees. It won't even phase them!

Please be aware that the Bug-A-Salt gun is not intended to kill larger insects or any kind of amphibian, including lizards.

NEW! BUG-A-SALT: Basic Operation and Troubleshooting

User Experiences: Pros and Cons

User experiences with the Bug-A-Salt vary significantly.

Pros:

  • Fun and Engaging: Bug-A-Salt has never made fly and insect control more fun. Not only do these work, but it provided hours of entertainment just watching them hunt down flies and spiders. I gave several of these guns to adult members of my family who are gun enthusiasts. Such a surprise was the one who has the biggest and best collection of guns than the others!. He absolutely LOVES his BUG-A-SALT!!!!! He couldn't hardly wait until he got home and showed his co-workers in the field how great it worked!
  • Effective at Close Range: It definitely does kill them if you’re close enough. The effective range seems to be about a foot or so.
  • Chemical-Free: No batteries, no chemicals, no mess - just load with regular salt and you're ready to go.
  • Versatile: I actually bought this to shoot slugs in my yard and it works just as planned.

Cons:

  • Durability Issues: Junk! Used for one day then the gun broke, will not pump. trigger broke within first months, cant get parts to fix it. no customer service or parts available. dont waste your money. After around 1000 shots both guns failed. At $50.00 dollars that is about $0.05 cents per shot. The salt dust gets into the air cylinder with the rubber seal and eats it up.
  • Inconsistent Performance: It works sometimes, but will not fire most of the time. Doesn't shoot any salt unless you cock it and shake it... The new one doesn't work most of the time. I received my Bug gun, and proceeded to try to use it.
  • Limited Range: I've not found the estimated three-foot range to be anywhere near correct.
  • Not Effective on All Insects: Stinks, doesn't kill anything, not small lizards, or moths.
  • Moisture Sensitivity: i live in Florida and salt in the reservoir quickly absorbs water from the air and doesn't refill the empty chamber.

Accuracy and Range

Nowhere near accurate at 3 feet. The sights are really of no help. But what the heck, this is a spray and pray type of weapon.

To see what your spray shot is, practice with a piece of aluminum foil to see what the spray pattern is from different feet away from the bug. The spread isn’t bad. It opens up about an inch for every foot of travel. Shot density is pretty good at 3 to 4 feet.

Maintenance and Longevity

Always perform maintenance on your gun when not loaded, just as you would any other firearm! I LOVE IT, BUT IT DOES HAVE SOME LIMITS!!!

One point of criticism: one time my gun got stuck and I had to watch a dumb video that got to the troubleshooting part after a couple of minutes. Please make a separate video with only troubleshooting and without the awful jokes.

Warranty and Customer Service

The gun does come with a manufacturers warranty and we urge you to call them so they can help you troubleshoot the issue and replace the gun if needed. The Bug-A-Salt 3.0 comes with a 2-year warranty, covering manufacturing defects and workmanship under normal use.

Customer service says. " It's probably wet salt... pour hot water in it." I live in Arizona. we have nothing wet here.
