Beauty Standards in Ethiopia: A Deep Dive into Tradition and Modernity

Beauty standards are not universal; they vary significantly across cultures and evolve over time. In Ethiopia, beauty is a multifaceted concept deeply rooted in tradition, religion, and modern artistic expression. This article explores the unique beauty standards in Ethiopia, how they are perceived both locally and globally, and the cultural significance of various beauty practices.

The Visibility of Ethiopian Beauty

Growing up in Ethiopia, filmmaker and artist Herrana Addisu has dedicated her life's work to highlighting the beauty standards and the experiences of women in her home country. Her recent film, "River," supported by Tina Knowles, delves into these themes. After winning the Blueprint Grant, SheaMoisture sponsored her creative agency, Chucha Studios, to produce the film, bringing to life a narrative that resonates with the Black community.

“I wanted the film to have complicated conversations that we don’t always have in this day and age,” she says. Addisu's work taps into cultural and traditional views of beauty, recalling the spiritual icons of Black hair in Church as a leading theme. “Our old Bibles and imagery I grew up seeing are Black angels and they have mini Afros,” Addisu says, which she included on the actors next to braids, scarves, and blow outs.

After shooting the film in Ethiopia, Adisu returned to New York to be shot in a photo series adjacent to River. In one photo, she props her chin on a jewelry stand with a bouffant hairdo, while in another she’s in spit curls on a river landscape, which is in reference to the life source of the film.

“Water streams in the global south, especially in Ethiopia rivers, are very essential not only in rural communities but urban communities as well,” she says.

Traditional Beauty Practices

Ethiopian stick and poke body tattooing, known as "Niksat," is a common tradition featured prominently in Addisu’s work. “Growing up, I always thought it was so beautiful,” she says. This practice reflects a deeper connection to cultural identity and aesthetic values.

Global Perception of Ethiopian Women

The perception of Ethiopian women's beauty extends beyond local borders. All genders, all ethnicities, and all nationalities seem to unite under the idea that Ethiopian women are among the most beautiful in the world. One of the most common features of these women is racial ambiguity. A chocolate skin tone and moderate physical attributes.

Data from Pew Research shows that most Americans find their dates through apps, so that is nothing to be surprised over. One thing I came to realize browsing through popular international dating sites is that every country has beautiful women. However it is very apparent that some countries have a much higher proportion of beautiful women than others.

You would assume that developed countries are more likely to have more beautiful women but that is totally wrong. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder they say, but there is beauty that turns the heads of all beholders. Even Drake mentioned them in one of his songs.

Historical Beauty Icons

Historically speaking, the bride of King Solomon in the Song of Songs is described as black and beautiful. Some people say that she was fictional but that is not true. The bible says she was a Shulamite meaning from Shulem, which is believed to be in Africa near South fo Egypt.

Now the other character whose beauty has fascinated historians is the queen of Sheba. She is described by Jewish Women Archives as a beautiful independent woman ruling a kingdom South of Sudan.
