Atlas Kasbah Ecolodge: A Sustainable Retreat in the Heart of Morocco

Agadir, a captivating seaside resort nestled in south-western Morocco, boasts an average of 300 days of sunshine annually. Its proximity to Europe and a six-mile stretch of golden sand beach make it an attractive destination for tourists.

While Agadir offers the typical tourist attractions, the region's true appeal lies in its spectacular landscapes and cultural experiences. To fully explore this, consider a stay at the Atlas Kasbah, an ecolodge located a short drive east of Agadir. The lodge stands on top of a hill and resembles a giant rust-colored sandcastle, with towers and ramparts.

A Commitment to Sustainable Tourism

The Atlas Kasbah, one of the first ecolodges in southern Morocco, is owned by Hassan, a Berber, and his French wife, Hélène, both of whom hold degrees in sustainable tourism. The lodge reflects their commitment to eco-friendly practices:

  • Solar power provides 80% of the lodge's energy.
  • Solar-heated showers are available.
  • The pool is chlorine-free.
  • A herb and vegetable garden provides fresh ingredients.

Authentic Moroccan Hospitality

Upon arrival in the large courtyard and salon, guests are welcomed with a traditional tea drinking ceremony. The 11-bedroom lodge offers comfortable suites featuring antique red carpets, large four-poster beds, and locally made black olive soap in the bathroom. The rooms offer views of the High Atlas mountains, and farmers tilling the ground and herding goats.

Members of the local Berber community work at the lodge, preparing evening meals of beef tagine and grilled fish.

Immersing Yourself in Berber Culture

Day trips offering visitors a sense of the local culture are the real draw of the Atlas Kasbah. Guests can visit the village of Tanfeesst. The bumpy route takes you along a dry river bed, past prickly pears and cacti. Around the communal olive press, large sacks of black olives gleamed in the sun, giving the village the scent of a giant tapenade, and a donkey hauled a huge grinding stone in a circle, crushing olives to release oil into buckets below.

You might be invited into the living room of one family for a breakfast of sweet mint tea, flatbread with honey and argan oil.

The village and hotel lie in the Souss-Massa-Drâa region in the Unesco argan tree biosphere reserve. We visited an argan factory, watching workers peel and press the nuts to make the oil which is used in Berber cookery, and hair and skin care.

Other excursions include visits to:

  • Ancient Taroudant
  • Agadir's busy fishing port
  • The hilltop ruins of Agadir's old kasbah, devastated by an earthquake in 1960.
