Famous Artists from Kenya: A Vibrant and Diverse Music Scene

With a variety of regional languages, ethnic groups, and geographical environments, Kenyan music has a complex history. There is a diversity of folk music, sung most frequently in Swahili or native languages. Traditional Kenyan music included instruments and costumes and was mostly passed down through word of mouth.

Kenyan music has been influenced by Afrobeats, Kwaito, Bongo, and Dancehall music. Activists constantly campaigning to develop Kenyan sounds are a strong sign that Kenyan music will soon occupy its rightful place.

In the last five years, the Kenyan music industry has rapidly expanded, moving from rap and hip-hop to Afro-pop and Gengetone. The once-struggling industry has now grown to be worth $1 billion. As a result, the top musicians are increasing their impact across the continent, while the up-and-coming musicians are unfazed.

Whatever your musical preference, you'll want to shake a leg to Kenya's music scene's innovativeness and vitality, which range from beats like Kapuka, Genge, and now the new age of Gengetone.

Pioneers and Legends

Daudi Kabaka, a Benga musician born in Kenya, is best known for the songs Harambe Harambee, Western Shillo and African Twist. His song Helule Helule was covered by The Tremeloes and became a hit in the UK. Daudi Kabaka is also known for his Kenyan classic “Harambee Harambee” which largely reflects the aspirations of post-colonial Kenya to build their nation. He collaborated with John Nzenze on three songs: Masista, Bachelor Boy and Nyumba za Tobacco.

His professional career began during World War 2, when he performed for East African troops in South Asia. Returning home, he made some of the earliest recordings from this region, including the hits “Mama Sowera”, “Majengo Siendi Tena”, “Kipenzi Waniua Ua” and “Jambo Sigara”.

E-Sir’s death in 2003 was a big shock to the country and to date industry enthusiasts hold annual anniversary to remember this artistic-genius. His debut album, and his only offering, was Nimefika and it became a super hit with virtually all the tracks in it becoming hits.

Les Wanyika Band has some of the most popular songs in Kenya. The band has released several great albums.

The late Musa Juma was the founder of Limpopo International Band and has inspired many more artists including Johnny Junior who is currently the biggest Luo-Rhumba artist in Kenya.

The Tanzanian-born artist sang in Luo and Swahili and was supported by his Shirati Jazz band. His prophetic lyrics hidden within riddles makes him one of the best singers.

Contemporary Stars

Ayub Ogada got a breakthrough when he was playing his Nyatiti in England and was soon to sign with Real World Records, where he released his debut “En Mana Kuoyo” album in 1993 and was able to tour extensively, including performing in front of the Roman Colosseum in Rome and later recorded “Tanguru” album. His music has been featured on Soundtracks of movies like I Dreamed Of Africa (2000), The Constant Gardener (2005), Samsara (2011) and The Good Life(2014). In July 2005, Ayub Ogada performed at the Live 8 concert Eden Project as the opening act with his band, Union Nowhere. They released the album Tanguru in 2007, the year Ayub moved back to Kenya.

Erick Wainaina remains a very relevant figure in Kenyan Music industry, with a KORA Award and Kisima Award to his name plus other nominations.

King Kaka made his debut in the music industry through the release of his album Tales of Kaka Sungura. Even though the record was in Swahili, it helped him become so well known in the nation. King Kaka was able to gather thousands of followers thanks to hits like Uko Chua, Swahili Shakespeare, and Adisia, and soon some of his songs were being used as street anthems.

Kaka is a successful businessman in addition to his great singing career. He started Kaka Empire's Majik Water, a filtered water business, in 2015. He gave his music brand name as the name of the business.

Kaligraph Jones, Kenyan rapper Brian Ouko Robert, sometimes known as Khaligraph Jones or Papa Jones, is well-known internationally. On June 12, 1990, he was born in Kayole Estate. On the other hand, Testimony 1990, his debut single, was released in 2018. Mazishi and Yego are his two best-known songs. Mejja, Major Nameye Khadija, also known as Mejja, is a Kenyan Genge Tone musician. While signed to Calif Records, he released a number of collaborations. His popular tune "Jana Kuliendaje" earned him a prize at the 2008 Kenya Chaguo la Teeniz. His most recent song, Tabia za Wakenya, is a witty and satirical song that parodies Kenyan habits.

Mercy Myra joined the Calabash Band in 1996 but left the following year to join the R&B band Destinee. Later in 1997, Mercy joined a group named Black Ice. Later, she decided to pursue a solo career and released her debut single, "Sitaki," produced by Samawati Studios, before the end of 1998. A remix of her hit song "Tie Dero" by young rapper Wangechi was released. She appeared in several performances abroad, including the 2002 and 2003 Festival Mundial and the 2004 Zanzibar International Film Festival. The Divas of the Nile collective, which also included four other well-known Kenyan female artists, included Mercy Myra.

Muthoni Drummer Queen, born and raised in Nairobi, is a musician and entrepreneur. She began performing in university, where she put on her own shows. She subsequently released her debut album, The Human Condition, in 2009. Her sound blends singing, rapping, drumming and social commentary with colorful live performances.

Nyashinski is a Kenyan rapper and singer whose career began as a member of the hip-hop trio Kleptomaniax. He began making music independently in the 2010s. In 2020, Nyashinski released his debut solo album, Lucky You, highlighting his lyrical and compositional skill of creating up-beat songs and also aggressive street tracks. Most recently, Nyashinski has been working on a 5-track EP titled Good Old Days, which was released in January 2024.

Otile Brown is a well-known personality in the Kenyan music scene and is a musician of outstanding talent. The musician, whose name is James Obunga, is from Kisumu. He is an R&B singer, guitarist, songwriter, and actor. However, he released his first studio album, "Best of Otile Brown," in 2017 and made his musical debut. As a result, he has continued to produce hit after hit. His most recent single, Such Kinda Love, shot to fame as soon as it was released in May.

Sanaipei Tande, a well-known Kenyan singer, karaoke host, lyricist, actor, and radio personality, is also known as Sana. She was born and raised in the coastal city of Mombasa. She founded a trio named Sema with her fellow contestants, Pam Waithaka and Kevin Waweru, and gained fame after winning the Coca-Cola Popstars, East Africa Edition talent search. Sana incorporates zouk, neo-taarab, r&b, and reggae styles. Her most recent love song, Yako, is literally translated as "Yours."

Suzanna Owiyo was requested to compose a theme song for the opening ceremony while preparations were being made for the centennial celebrations of the city of Kisumu. Suzanna then decided to work on an album with Kenyan music producer Kora Awards. The album, which received great success on the radio, won her a nomination in the Kora Awards 2002 in the “Most Promising Female Artist” category. The same album won her a Kisima Awards for the Most Promising Female Artist of 2003. In June 2003, she represented her country, Kenya, at the Kenyan Festival in Paris organized by Alliance Française. In August the same year she represented East Africa at the Pan-African music Festival in Brazzaville where she sang alongside other African greats.

Wakadinali is a Kenyan music group based in Nairobi’s Eastland area. The group focuses on the Hip-Hop genre of music.

Xenia Manasseh is a fast-rising Kenyan R&B musician who travels between Nairobi and a few states in the United States. Singer-songwriter Xenia Manasseh was born in Nairobi and graduated from Berklee College of Music with a degree in Music Business and Management. Her first EP Fallin’ Apart was released in 2019, and debuted at #1 on the Kenyan iTunes R&B/Soul charts and #2 in all genres. Two years later, Manasseh released her second EP Maybe, which was selected as the Editor’s Choice on Apple Music. In 2023, Manasseh released her debut album LOVE / HATE Pt.

Just A Band was formed when their members were studying at Kenyatta University. They went on to release the song “Iwinyo Piny” accompanied by a self-made animated music video. Initially the song received little airplay due to its unconventional musical style, but with time they started to gain popularity through underground channels. Their debut album Scratch to reveal was relatively successful. They released their second single “Ha-He” on 17 March 2010, accompanied by a music video featuring a character known as Makmende. The video has subsequently been described as Kenya’s first viral internet meme by the Wall Street Journal, CNN and Fast Company.
