The Red Sea is renowned for its vibrant and diverse marine ecosystem, including the captivating and intelligent dolphins. While significant global progress has been made in understanding marine mammals, the Red Sea remains one of the world's least studied regions in this regard. However, a recent report compiling historical records and current data on the sea's mammal species is changing that, providing essential information for science-based conservation efforts.

This article delves into the fascinating world of dolphins in the Egyptian Red Sea, exploring the various species that call this region home, their preferred habitats, and the challenges they face. This process is driven by upwelling currents, which bring nutrient-rich deeper waters to the surface, fertilizing the phytoplankton that require sunlight.

However, upwelling currents are rare in the Red Sea, making it a challenging environment for large whales that rely on swarms of krill (small crustaceans) for survival. This scarcity may explain why only a few whale species have successfully colonized the Red Sea. The environment is more suitable for smaller dolphin species like spinner dolphins and pantropical spotted dolphins.

Common Dolphin Species in the Egyptian Red Sea

Eight dolphin species are considered regular inhabitants of the Red Sea:

  • Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops aduncus)
  • Spinner Dolphin (Stenella longirostris)
  • Pantropical Spotted Dolphin (Stenella attenuata)
  • Long-beaked Common Dolphin (Dephinus capensis)
  • Risso’s Dolphin (Grampus griseus)
  • Humpback Dolphin (Sousa chinensis)
  • Bryde’s Whale (Balaenoptera edeni)

Other eight species are considered rare.

While information on their presence is limited, even less is known about their abundance and distribution. Enhanced knowledge of cetacean presence, distribution, habits, and potential threats can provide more tools to promote effective conservation practices.

Spinner Dolphins (Stenella longirostris)

The most commonly seen dolphins in the Red Sea are the spinner dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, and Risso’s dolphins. Spinner dolphins are the three most famous and frequently seen around reefs and in large sheltered lagoons. They are highly sociable and will often be encountered in large groups, particularly in Sha’ab Satayah, Samadi Reef, and Sha’ab El Erg. Spinner dolphins are easily identifiable by their acrobatic spinning leaps, which they perform above and below the water’s surface.

Spinner dolphins have long, slender beaks and color patterns, consisting of a dark grey cape, light grey lateral field, and white ventral field. Adults range from 129 - 235 cm and reach a body mass of 23 - 78 kg (Perrin 2002).

They are carnivores and feed on small animals such as fish, squid, and shrimp.

Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops aduncus)

Bottlenose dolphins are also found in the Red Sea and are even known to inhabit waters in British waters. In the Red Sea, they are often seen in the same areas as spinner dolphins and are also highly sociable creatures. Bottlenose dolphins are larger and more robust than spinner dolphins and have a distinctive “bottle-shaped” nose that gives them their name.

The Indo-Pacific bottlenose is a species of dolphin with a length of 2.6 m and a weight of up to 230 kg, marked with a dark grey back and a lighter grey or almost white belly with grey spots. Until 1998, all bottlenose dolphins were considered members of a single species. is generally smaller than the common bottlenose dolphin, with a proportionately longer rostrum, and spots on its belly and lower sides.

Diurnal activity pattern of the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins in the Northern Red Sea Islands was studied from 2012 and 2017 from vessel and/or underwater during SCUBA dives or snorkels. The study suggests that dolphins use the Northern Islands area to rest (60%), socialize (27%), travel (10%), and forage (3%) underlying the importance of the area for the population (Kreicker & Ziltener 2017).

Risso’s Dolphins (Grampus griseus)

The third most commonly seen dolphin in the Red Sea is the Risso’s dolphin. These dolphins are larger and more slender than bottlenose dolphins and are identified by their stocky head and short beak. Sadly this wonderful species has been very exploited and is now the main species found in captivity. Remarkably intelligent, the species is now recognized as having three distinct genus, although they are all referred to as Bottlenose Dolphin.in the Red Sea, the first glimpse of these dolphins is usually from the dive boat as it sails up the Straits of Tiran, as small pods of dolphins will ride the bow wave.

These dolphins have a unique appearance, with a grey body and distinctive markings that make them easily identifiable. They have a short snout and a blowhole on the top of their head.With a slim build and triangular dorsal fin, the Risso Dolphin is a beautiful creature that is dark grey on its upper body, almost changing to black at the tip of its snout, pectoral fins, and tail.

False killer whales (Pseudorca crassidens) are fascinating creatures that belong to the dolphin family. Despite their name, they are not closely related to the killer whale or orca, but they share some similar physical and behavioral traits. They are one of the largest members of the dolphin family, with adult males reaching lengths of up to 6 meters (20 feet) and weighing over 1,500 kg (3,300 lbs).

Threats to Dolphins in the Red Sea

Dolphins face an uncertain future due to numerous threats, primarily caused by human activities.

  • Ship Traffic: The Red Sea is a major shipping route, with an estimated 4% of global oil supply passing through it. This heavy traffic poses a threat of oil spills and disturbance to marine life.
  • Tourism: Unmanaged tourism can disrupt dolphin behavior, especially in resting areas like Samadai Reef and Sataya, where spinner dolphins seek refuge from sharks during the day.
  • Fishing: Some fishermen use dolphin meat as bait for catching sharks, impacting dolphin populations.
  • Accidental Deaths: Dolphins can be accidentally killed by fishing nets, shark attacks, and boat accidents.

Conservation Efforts

Addressing these threats requires concerted conservation efforts.

  • International Agreements: Implementing a model similar to the agreement between countries bordering the Mediterranean and Black Seas, which commits coastal nations to protecting cetaceans.
  • Habitat Protection: Identifying and protecting important marine mammal areas, based on criteria developed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. These areas are crucial for feeding, breeding, and migration.
  • Responsible Tourism: Limiting non-organized tourism activities and promoting responsible interactions with dolphins.
  • Research and Monitoring: Conducting ongoing research to understand dolphin populations, behaviors, and threats, and using this knowledge to inform conservation strategies.

The research is carried out on board of “Red Sea Defender” the 37m still boat owned by HEPCA and fully equipped to research purposes in the Red Sea. The monitoring plan anticipates twelve weeks per year at sea, six in the summer (June to August) and six in the winter (December to March) for 3 years (from June 2010 to March 2013). Three researchers from HEPCA and five interns coming from all around the world will compose the research team. Eco-volunteers will have the possibility to join the expeditions in order to support the project and enjoy an exciting experience at sea.

The routes The study area is spread over 50km from the coast and 460km from Marsa Alam in the North almost to the Sudan border (Abu Ramad area). About 80% of the study area is included in protected areas: Wadi El Gemal - Hamata protectorates and Elba National Park are indeed two of the few completely pristine areas on the Egyptian Red Sea coast.
